1. Overview

With version 1.8.0, new features are included in the Impose Editor, automated processing of Production Jobs, and automation of Fixups. Additional improvements have been made concerning Color Management and the editing and Output of Print Data. In addition, we've made improvements in the areas of Color Management and the processing/output of print data.

An overview of all changes are outlined below, and a detailed description is included for specific areas such as features, improvements and bug fixes.

1.1. Adobe Illustrator Plug-in

The following new features are available in version 1.8.0.5 of the Plug-in:

Plug-In version 1.8.0: If you are working with version 1.8.0 of the Workflow, version 1.8.0.5 of the Plug-in must be installed to ensure consistent operation. Between Workflow versions 1.7.9 & 1.8.0 no new features were implemented in the Plug-in. Five bugs have been fixed, and the version number was changed to match the Workflow version.

1.2. New Features in the Workflow

The following new features are available in version 1.8.0 of the Workflow:

File Manager: In version 1.8.0 two new extensions are available in the File Manager of the Impose Editor:

  • Uploading of PSB and SVG files – Starting with this version, PSB and SVG files can be uploaded and used in the File Manager. Its important to note that SVG files must meet specific criteria to be processed correctly.
  • Create separate Print Items – From version 1.8.0, the File Manager allows you to split multi-page documents into individual pages (print items) in the Article, Order & Production Job tabs.

Nesting: With version 1.8.0 the Impose Mode »Nesting« has been extended. Existing algorithms were improved and new functions were implemented.

  • Add additional space for rotated Items – For rotated Print Items in Nesting mode, additional spacing can be defined, this helps avoid problems when cutting sheets.
  • Single/Multipage Output – Until now, Nesting impositions were always single sided. In the course of this version, a new Multipage Nesting Output was implemented. This function allows all Print Items in the Production Job to be imposed over several pages.
  • Nesting Optimization – From this version on, a Single Page Nesting can be optimized as needed. By starting the optimization process, an attempt is made to save even more space (reducing waste).

Captions: In version 1.8.0 new placeholders for default Captions are available and Barcodes/QR Captions can now be added.

  • New Captions – From this version on, the due date of an Order Item, production date and shipping date of a Production Job and the render start time of a Production Job can be added as a Caption in the Impose Editor.
  • Barcode/QR Code Captions – In addition to default Captions, a QR or Barcode can be generated and rendered as a Caption.

DeviceN Spot Colors: As of version 1.8.0, DeviceN Spot Colors can be created system-wide in the Workflow and used for additional processing. Some areas in the Workflow had to be revised or adapted so that DeviceN Spot Colors can be used.

  • Add System-wide DeviceN Spot Colors – From version 1.8.0, DeviceN Spot Colors can be created System-wide, Substrate-specific and Customer-specific in the Workflow per Color Configuration. When a Print Item is uploaded, Spot Colors are mapped automatically.
  • Fallback solutions for problem cases – When using System-wide DeviceN Spot Colors, problem cases can sometimes occur where the current DeviceN definition can no longer be used; e.g., when a color configuration is modified. Therefore we've implemented the generation of a fallback LAB color value, which is saved with each DeviceN definition. This can be used if the DeviceN value is no longer valid.

Lead In/Out: The Lead In/Out settings can now be defined in the system-wide settings of the Workflow starting with version 1.8.0. New Production Jobs will then use these settings by default.

  • System Settings – From this version onwards, the quantity and content (Process Colors, Spot Colors and Technical Colors) can be defined in the system-wide settings of the Workflow. These settings can then be applied to new Production Jobs or Hotfolder settings as needed.
  • Send to Printer dialog – In a Production Job, system-wide settings for Lead In/Out can be checked and, if necessary, overwritten before the Production Job is sent to the printer.

Settings - Color Management: The Color Management tab located under Administration > Settings in the Workflow settings has been extended in this version. System-wide Working Color Spaces in CMYK, RGB & Grayscale, as well as user-defined Output Color Spaces have been introduced.

  • Working Color SpacesWorking Color Spaces include the most common international standards for CMYK, RGB & Grayscale profiles. The user can choose a default for each Color Space in the Workflow. Alternatively, personal international standards can be uploaded and managed. Additionally, these profiles can be opened and/or compared in the Gamut Viewer.
  • Output Color SpacesOutput Color Spaces contain all user-defined ICC profiles. There you can upload and manage your own printer ICC profiles. These profiles can be opened and/or compared in the Gamut Viewer as well.

Gamut Viewer: Gamut Viewer functions have been improved in version 1.8.0. Starting with this version, two profiles can be compared with each other and superimposed.

  • New Functions – The Gamut Viewer offers additional settings in the visual display area to better compare profiles.
  • Comparing Profiles – It is now possible to compare two Profiles (Color Setups), Color Policies and/or Working Color Spaces or Output Color Spaces.

PDF output - »Prepress Workflow«: From version 1.8.0 on, a predefined printer type called Adobe - PDF is available, which can be used to copy a finished impose output PDF into a defined target directory. From there, this output PDF can be processed automatically by a third party.

Use a Color Setup for multiple Substrates: Until now, a Color Setup or Color Policy could only be applied to single Substrates in the Workflow. Starting with this version, Color Setups can be combined with several Substrates. The respective Color Policies can then be selected and used for all connected Substrates.

Fixups: Existing Fixups have been improved in handling and the range of functions has been extended. Furthermore, additional Fixup options have been added.

  • Add White Outline for colored areas – Adds a white outline for selected color areas to reduce bleeding of colors.
  • Extract Print Items from Page – Extracts a multi-page PDF from embedded objects using the defined Spot Color.
  • Remove Spot Color – Removes selected Spot Colors.
  • Resize TrimBox – If the TrimBox is larger than the MediaBox or BleedBox, then these frames will also be enlarged.
  • Split long Print Item into several pages – This Fixup has been extended to include two variants, Split by Page Height and Split by Number of Pages.
  • Change Tint value for Spot Color – All Spot Colors contained in the Print Item are available using a drop-down menu.
  • Add Dieline – All Fixups that can add a Dieline, have been extended so that an additional Dieline can be added at the same time.

REST API: New functions for Orders, Articles and Production Jobs are available in the REST API. Improvements have been implemented in the Fixup Controller.

1.3. Improvements

The following improvements to existing functions have been added to version 1.8.0 of the Workflow:

PSB and SVG support: Both file formats are supported from this version on and can be loaded into the Workflow. SVG elements must meet certain criteria to be output correctly.

Deleting Substrates: From this version on: Substrate Definitions, Substrates & Substrate Categories can be deleted in the Workflow. All elements that use the Substrate to be deleted are mapped to a system Substrate, which is delivered with the standard system. Therefore, data is not deleted automatically.

Support for Lasercomb ProDigi: The ProDigi cutting device series from the company Lasercomb is now supported with this version. Selection the cutting device determines the default Mark settings and the corresponding DIN-shear file, which is transferred to the Lasercomb Plotter-Software.

Routine to delete Production Jobs: From this version on a new system routine is available, which will delete all Production Jobs »older than« automatically. The Production Jobs deleted using this routine can not be restored afterwards.

Small Improvements: Further minor improvements have been implemented, which are listed at the end of the improvements section.

1.4. Fixed Bugs

Adobe Illustrator Plug-In: A list of fixed bugs and/or minor improvements in the Adobe Illustrator Plug-In.

Workflow: A list of fixed bugs and/or minor improvements in the main application.

Impose Editor: A list of fixed bugs and/or minor improvements in the Impose Editor.

2. New Features

In this section we'll cover new features that have been implemented for the Adobe Illustrator Plug-In, the Impose Editor and the Workflow in general. In certain cases, existing Workflow functions have simply been enhanced.

2.1. Adobe Illustrator Plug-In

If you are working with version 1.8.0 of the Workflow, version 1.8.0.5 of the Plug-In must be installed to ensure consistent operation. If you are using an older version of the Plug-In, you will be notified in the Plug-In when you log in.

Support for older versions of Adobe Illustrator

Please note that the current Plug-In Version 1.8.0.5 can only installed for Adobe Illustrator CC 2019 and Adobe Illustrator CC 2020.

Adobe Illustrator CC 2017 and Adobe Illustrator CC 2015.3 can still be used with the Plug-In Version 1.7.0.26 in conjunction with Durst Workflow 1.7.2. Using Plug-In Version 1.7.0.26 in conjunction with newer Workflow versions is at your own risk. Support cases or bugs for this constellation/configuration will not be followed up and/or fixed.

Adobe Illustrator 2018 can still be used with Plug-In version 1.7.6.36 in conjunction with Durst Workflow 1.7.6. The use of Plug-In version 1.7.6.36 in conjunction with newer Workflow versions is at your own risk. Support cases or errors for this constellation will not be followed up and corrected.

No new changes

No changes between Workflow versions 1.7.9 and 1.8.0 were implemented in the Plug-in. 5 known bugs have been fixed, and also includes language updates, and the Plug-In version number was changed to match the Workflow version.

Support for Adobe Illustrator CC 2021

The version Adobe Illustrator CC 2021 introduced on Monday, October 19, 2020, is not yet compatible with the Plug-In. A corresponding update is under development.

2.2. File Manager

In version 1.8.0 only minor improvements were made to the File Manager. Read the next section to find out which changes have been implemented in this release.

2.2.1. Uploading PSB and SVG files

From version 1.8.0 on, PSB files can be uploaded in the File Manager. These file types are also supported for other areas where files can be uploaded in the Workflow. Additionally, SVG files can be uploaded into the Workflow from this version on.

Note on SVG files

SVG files can be very complex and can contain constructs that are not supported by the workflow. These include external links, scripts or animations in SVG files that cannot be resolved and processed correctly.

If, apart from the above mentioned functions, other constellations do not work, please let us know so that we can support SVG files in future versions with an even wider range of functions.

2.2.2. Create separate Print Items

Starting with version 1.8.0, Multipage PDFs contained in an Article can be split into individual files in the Article tab of the File Manager. Because it is not currently possible to impose multipage documents, this function has also been implemented in the File Manager. To split multipage documents in the File Manager, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the Impose Editor.
  2. Switch to the Articles tab in the File Manager.
  3. Select a multipage pdf file.
  4. Under the additional menu [1] select Create individual Print Items. When the process is finished, a new Print Item is created for each page. These Print Items can then be imposed in the Impose Editor.

2.3. Nesting

Improvements and extensions have also been implemented in the Impose mode Nesting. Starting with this version, a separate offset can be defined for rotated Print Items. Nesting impositions can also be created and output using Single or Multiple pages. A Single page Nesting can also be optionally optimized in order to reduce material waste. Read the following sections below to find more detailed information regarding these new features.

2.3.1. Add additional space for rotated items

In the Nesting mode, Print Items can be rotated under the Rotation – Non-uniform rotation setting. After individual Print Items have been rotated on the sheet, spacing can be defined for these rotated Print Items specifically. This spacing [2] can be defined by the user as of version 1.8.0, which adds space for additional Marks and move rotated Print Items to the edge of the sheet which helps reduce the amount of cuts that need to be made.

Impose Editor

2.3.2. Single/Multipage Output

Until now, a Nesting impositions were only output as single sided sheets. Version 1.8.0 offers a new feature that allows the user to create and output multipage Nesting impositions based on the number of copies to be imposed. The following two sections offer more information regarding this new feature.

Single Page Output

Before version 1.8.0, Nesting impositions were always single sided. We have kept the single sided Nesting as the default behavior when the impose editor is opened using Nesting mode. If you select Impose Output > Single Page Output [5], the Nesting remains single sided. Using the Nesting Options [6] drop-down, the imposition can be optimized or adapted as needed:

  • Strategy

    • Allow Overproduction
    • Keep exact ratio of copies
  • Layoutonly available when Print Items have the same dimension!

Single sided Nestings using the existing Nesting Options in previous versions of the Workflow led to warnings and errors [3] in most situations, typically because Print Items could not be imposed completely for various reasons.

Impose Editor

If individual Print Items can't be imposed completely or at all, the Imposition Warnings pop-up panel [3] displays information, showing errors and warnings for the Artboard [4]. The following information is available:

  • Placed Print Items X/Y – Indicates the number of Print Items (X) and (Y) in the Production Job will be used in the imposition.
  • Copies to be printed – Indicates the amount of times the imposition must be printed for the specified number of copies for each Print Item to be fulfilled.
  • Unplaced Print Items [7] – Print Items that are not used in the imposition
  • Underproduced Print Items [8] – Print Items that cannot be placed completely.

In order to alleviate this constant state of warnings and errors, we have implemented a new way to impose Print Items which outputs a Multipage Nesting, that explicitly places all Print Items contained in a Production Job.

Multipage Output

Starting with version 1.8.0, either a Single Page or Multipage Nesting can be created when the operator chooses the Impose Output setting. If the Impose Output > Multipage Output [10] option is selected in the Settings drop-down, the Nesting imposition will contain multiple pages. Under the drop-down Nesting Options, the Nesting can be optimized or adapted as needed:

  • Rotation
    • Non-Uniform Rotation
    • Uniform Rotation
    • 0° Rotation
    • 90° Rotation
  • Horizontal and Vertical Spacing

The Strategy used in Multipage Nesting is always Keep exact Ratio of Copies, as this ensures that all the Print Item will be imposed in the Production Job.

Impose Editor

When the Multipage Output [10] option is selected the UI of the Impose Editor will change:

  • In the header of the Impose Editor, a Paging widget [9] appears.
  • Print Items contained in the Production Job are now imposed on pages always respecting the number of copies per Print Item.
  • The Artboard Settings [4] (Figure 3) are hidden, since only one Artboard is needed when using Multipage Output mode.
  • In the footer, you can switch between information concerning All pages or the Current page [11] being viewed.
  • The Trim to Height option can also be activated which will result in different sheet dimensions per page depending on the layout of the Print Items.

Regarding the availability of Multipage Outputs

Initially, the first implementation of Multipage Output is only available in the Impose Editor. The Multipage Output settings are included when saving an Impose Template for example. In the near future, Multipage Outputs will be available for Hotfolders as well. Using Multipage Output is also working for Jobs created using Force Print.

2.3.3. Nesting Optimization

Starting with version 1.8.0, a Single Page Nesting using Print Items with different dimensions can be further optimized after the first instance of the imposition has been created. The goal of Nesting Optimization is to reduce the printed area. The following conditions must be fulfilled in order to utilize Nesting Optimization:

  • This option is available in the Workflow Plus and Print Workflow versions with the additional Production Optimization Toolbox option. Optimization is available in all Workflow Label versions.
  • In version 1.8.0, optimization is only available for Nesting Print Items with different dimensions
  • With version 1.8.0, optimizing Multipage Outputs is not yet available.

Before a Nesting can be optimized, some settings must be made system-wide so that the desired optimization can be performed. For this purpose, two system-wide settings have been implemented in the Impose Editor tab under the Administration > Settings menu:

  • Max.Duration ... Seconds [12] – Entering the desired duration in seconds determines how long the optimization process may run until a newer, better imposition is created. If no additional improvements can be created within this time period, the optimization process will be automatically terminated. The default value is 30 seconds.
  • Stop after ... Iterations [13] – By entering the desired number of iterations, this setting determines the amount of optimized imposition instances should be generated before terminating the process. If the number of iterations has been reached, and no additional improvements can be created, and the Max. Duration in seconds has not yet expired, then the optimization process is automatically terminated. The default value is 500 iterations.

PMS WebGui :: Impose Editor

After you have entered your desired Nesting Optimization settings under the menu item Administration > Settings, the imposition is ready to be optimized. All you need now is to create a single sided Nesting using Print Items with different dimensions and the option Trim to height should also be activated. Proceed as follows:

Open the Impose Editor and switch to Nesting mode and choose Single Page Output [15] in the Settings drop-down.

  1. Add several Print Items with different dimensions and number of copies.
  2. Wait until all the Print Items are placed on the sheet.
  3. In the header of the Impose Editor you can see that the imposition has not yet been optimized [14] .
  4. To optimize the imposition, press the Start button in the header.

  1. After starting the optimization process, all settings for the Nesting are deactivated, so that no changes can be made in the current version of the Nesting. Each improvement found is displayed as an optimization version [17].
  2. In the example in Figure 9, there are six different optimized versions of the imposition, which can be individually selected as needed.
  3. Stop the optimization process manually by clicking on the Stop-Start button [16] or wait until the optimization is finished automatically.
  4. Then select the desired iteration [17].
  5. Save the selected imposition. Optimized impositions are marked in the Impose tab of a Production Job with an Optimized text.

Impose Editor

If you reopen an optimized nesting in the Impose Editor, the saved, optimized imposition is displayed. At this point, no more changes can be made, otherwise the optimization would no longer be valid. For this reason, all settings are locked when opening an optimized imposition.

However, if you want to make changes, the optimization can be reset by clicking the Reset button [18]. When resetting, the optimization is reset and cannot be restored - unless you exit the Impose Editor without saving the reset version. However, changes can then be made to the imposition again. After the changes have been made, the optimization process can be started again.

PMS WebGui :: Print Data

Availability of the function

Initially, the first implementation of Nesting Optimization is only available in the Impose Editor using Nesting with Single Page Outputs and Print Items with different dimensions. The optimization for Multipage Output will be available in future versions of the Workflow. Optimization is not currently available for Force Print and Hotfolders, but will be available in future versions of the Workflow.

2.4. Captions

In this version we've added additional improvements for default Captions, and two placeholder options are available, e.g. the due date and production date. We've also added Barcode Captions with version 1.8.0. The user can now add Captions using both text and Barcodes.

2.4.1. New Captions

Caption content can be freely defined as needed under the Caption settings. By entering text and pressing the Update Caption button, entered text is displayed on the sheet. By pressing the @-key a list of dynamic placeholders is displayed which can be used for Captions. We have updated this list with four new placeholders. The following new placeholders are available in the Impose Editor:

With version 1.8.0 the list of Placeholders has been updated will the following items:

  • The Due Date of an Order Item [19].
  • The Production Date of a Production Job [20].
  • The Shipping Date of a Production Job [21].
  • The render start time of a Production Job [22].

2.4.2. Barcode/QR Code Captions

In addition to default Captions which can only output text information, a QR or Barcode can be generated and rendered as a Caption in the imposition. This is a new type of Caption which may offer Workflow users more flexibility when leveraging Captions.

Proceed as follows to create a Barcode or QR code Caption:

  1. Open the Impose Editor.
  2. Choose your desired Impose mode.
  3. Create your imposition.
  4. Click on the Marks tab [23] on the right side of the Impose Editor.
  5. Open the Caption drop-down menu and select Barcode Caption [24].

  1. In the settings area you can define the following options for Barcodes Captions:
    • Type [25] – Select the desired Barcode or QR Code type to be generated from this drop-down menu. This list contains all standard international Barcodes and QR Codes. The option Show Text [33] can only be used for Barcodes, because QR Codes support undefined amounts of characters.
    • Width and Height [26] – Define the dimensions of the Barcode or QR Code here.
    • Origin and Position [27] – Just as for default Captions, the Origin, Position and Reference Point can be selected for Barcodes. These settings do not differ from previously known elements in the Impose Editor. You can also select whether the QR and/or Barcode should be placed on the left, center or right side of the reference point and/or whether the placement should be placed on the inside of the selected position.
    • Indent and Offset [28] – The Indent and Offset settings are also identical to default Captions. You can read more about this in the release notes for version 1.7.9 in the section CaptionsOffset und Indent.
    • Rotation Options [29] – Barcodes and QR codes can be rotated with the Print Item or separately by 0° or 180°.
    • Content [30] – Content for Barcodes and QR codes can also be defined as simple text as usual. Please note that Barcodes only support certain characters and/or only a certain number of characters.
    • Font Settings [31] – The font can also be modified as needed, this is the same as normal Captions. These settings only take effect when a Barcode is created and the Show Text [33] option is activated.
    • Color Options [32] – For QR codes and Barcodes, a background color and a foreground color can be defined in CMYK or as Spot Color. In addition, the Barcode or QR code can also be set to Overprint.

2.5. DeviceN Spot Colors

DeviceN spot colors are Spot Colors that are only partially changed in the output by the color management in the Workflow. These Spot Colors are only processed or modified by the Ink limit, Linearization, Transition and Pre-Linearization profile. For example, if a DeviceN Spot Color is defined in C 100 | M 0 | Y 0 | K | 0, this Spot Color is output as pure Cyan.

Until now, DeviceN Spot Colors could only be created or managed on the Print Item level. If a Print Item was opened, a new Spot Color definition could be created based on the Print Item, Customer or the Substrate. In these cases, it was previously possible to create DeviceN Spot Colors. This definition was therefore only valid for that specific Job.

DeviceN Spot Colors always refer to the selected Color Policy or Color Configuration. If a Color Configuration was changed after a DeviceN Spot Color was created, this Spot Color could no longer be rendered because the Color Configuration no longer matched the original.

As of version 1.8.0, DeviceN Spot Colors can be created, managed and used globally, i.e., system-wide, Substrate specific and Customer specific. We'll get into more detail in the description below.

2.5.1. Add System-wide DeviceN Spot Colors

From version 1.8.0, DeviceN spot colors can also be created and managed system-wide. The user can determine whether the DeviceN definition should be created or used globally - i.e. system-wide, Substrate-specific and/or Customer-specific. One DeviceN Spot Color definition with the same Spot Color name can be created in the system for each Color Configuration. No DeviceN Spot Color can be defined several times with the same Color Configuration.

Follow the steps to create a DeviceN Spot Color system-wide:

  1. Switch to Color > Manage Spot Colors.
  2. Click on the +New button in the footer of the System-wide, Substrate-specific or Customer-specific sub-panels.
  3. Define a unique Name [34] for the Spot Color to be created.
  4. Select DeviceN for the Color Mode [35].
  5. As soon as DeviceN is selected as the Color Mode, a Color Policy [36] must be selected so that the Spot Color definition can be created. The Color Policy contains a Color Configuration that is mandatory for the DeviceN value. The name of the Spot Color must be unique in connection with the Color Configuration so that the Spot Color definition can be created or used.
  6. Enter the desired color values [37] for the DeviceN Spot Color.
  7. Click on Save to complete the process.
  8. When saving the new DeviceN Spot Color definition, a fallback Spot Color definition correlating to this Spot Color is automatically created using Lab values in the Workflow. This definition or value is necessary so that a fallback value for the Spot Color can be used for rendering in problem cases. You can read more about this in the next section.

Summary

If for a specific Color Policy using a defined color combination e.g.: CMYKOVG, a DeviceN Spot Color is created, the defined Name, in this case, Pure Orange, will be output as 100% Orange as soon as the Color Configuration CMYK-OVG is used. The Spot Color Name must be contained in the Print Item or Article and the Color Configuration of the Print Item, Article or Production Job must match the Color Configuration of the Spot Color definition.

To ensure that Pure Orange can also be output as 100% Orange for the Color Configuration CMYK-OV, the same Spot Color definition must also be created separately for the selected Color Policy using a CMYK-OV color profile. The same Spot Color definition can be created per Color Configuration. Only the combination of Color Configuration and Spot Color names must be unique.

2.5.2. Fallback solutions using specific cases

When a DeviceN Spot Color definition is created, i.e., on the Print Item level or System-wide - a Lab fallback Spot Color value is automatically generated and saved. This Lab fallback value is automatically used if the Color Configuration of the Print Item, Article and/or Production Job does not match the Color Configuration of the defined DeviceN Spot Color.

Which Lab values are used for the fallback DeviceN definition?

When creating a DeviceN Spot Color definition, a Color Policy must be selected. The value for the Lab fallback is determined by reconverting into the available color gamut. Thus, the Lab value represents an in-gamut value that can be exactly reproduced on the printing system in the selected Color Configuration.

Create DeviceN Spot Color definitions in the correct order

Always create the Spot Color definition for a DeviceN Spot Color with a Color Policy that offers the largest color range first. This ensures that the Lab color value has the highest possible color value for the selected printing system.

This approach may result in various scenarios, which we explain in more detail below.

Case 1 – ideal scenario

  • System-wide a DeviceN Spot Color Pure Orange was created using a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.
  • A Lab fallback value based on the CMYK-OVG Color Policy was automatically calculated and created System-wide as an additional Spot Color with the same name.
  • The user uploads a Print Item containing the Spot Color Pure Orange into the Workflow and uses a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.

Result: The Spot Color Pure Orange uses the System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition from the Spot Color Pure Orange.

Case 2 – using a different Color Policy

  • The System-wide a DeviceN Spot Color Pure Orange was created using a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.
  • A Lab fallback value based on the CMYK-OVG Color Policy was automatically calculated and created System-wide as an additional Spot Color with the same name.
  • The user uploads a Print Item containing the Spot Color Pure Orange into the Workflow and uses a Color Policy that is not a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.

Result: The Spot Color Pure Orange uses the automatically generated, System-wide Lab fallback value of the Spot Color definition for Pure Orange. The output is based on the conversion of the Pure Orange Spot Color from Lab values to the target color space. Therefore, percentages from other primary colors in the color mixture for Pure Orange can be used.

Preventing deviation from color mixtures

If the Lab fallback value should not be used, a separate System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition must be created for the selected Color Policy or Color Configuration.

Case 3 – Using a different color strategy in a production job

  • A System-wide a DeviceN Spot Color Pure Orange was created using a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.
  • A Lab fallback value based on the CMYK-OVG Color Policy was automatically calculated and created System-wide as an additional Spot Color with the same name.
  • The user uploads a Print Item containing the Spot Color Pure Orange into the Workflow and uses a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.

Preliminary result: The Spot Color Pure Orange uses the System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition of the Spot Color Pure Orange.

  • The user uses the uploaded Print Item in a Production Job using a different Color Policy, which is not a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.

Final result: The Spot Color Pure Orange uses the automatically generated, System-wide Lab fallback value of the Spot Color Pure Orange. The output is based on the conversion of the Pure Orange Spot Color from Lab to the target color space. Thus, percentages of other primary colors in the color mixture for Pure Orange can be used.

Preventing deviation from original color mixtures

If the Lab fallback value should not be used, a separate System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition must be created for the selected Color Policy or Color Configuration from the Production Job.

Case 4 – Assigning a different Color Policy to a Print Item

  • A System-wide, a DeviceN Spot Color Pure Orange was created using a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.
  • This automatically calculates a Lab fallback value based on the CMYK-OVG Color Policy and created an additional System-wide Spot Color with the same name.
  • The user uploads a Print Item containing the Spot Color Pure Orange into the Workflow using a CMYK-OVG Color Policy.

Preliminary result: The Spot Color Pure Orange uses the System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition of the Spot Color Pure Orange. The output is based on the selected DeviceN color values.

  • Coincidentally, the user assigns a different Color Policy or Color Configuration to the Print Item.

Result: The Spot Color Pure Orange uses the automatically generated, System-wide Lab fallback value for the Spot Color definition for Pure Orange. The output is based on the conversion of the Pure Orange Spot Color from Lab to the target color space. Thus, percentages of other primary colors in the color mixture for Pure Orange can be used.

Preventing deviation from original color mixtures

If the Lab fallback value should not be used, a separate System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition must be created for the selected Color Policy or Color Configuration from the Production Job.

Deleting the DeviceN fallback value

The automatically generated Lab fallback value of a DeviceN Spot Color could be deleted by a user, but in this case the Workflow would automatically recalculate the missing Lab fallback value and create the Spot Color definition again.

However, if the DeviceN Spot Color is deleted, the Lab fallback value is also deleted.

2.5.3. DeviceN Definitions for Print Items

The currently used Spot Color definition is displayed in the Article or Print Item at all times. The Spot Color can be changed or removed if necessary. These changes are only saved for the current Print Item. System-wide definitions are not changed in this way. Follow these steps to view the current Spot Color definitions:

  1. Open a Print Item or Article in an Order or Production Job.
  2. In the Print Data tab, navigate to the Spot Colors sub-panel.
  3. Open the Spot Color Definition dialog by clicking on the corresponding icon in the footer of the Spot Colors sub-panel.
  4. This dialog displays the current Spot Color definitions [39] contained in the Article or Print Item.
  5. Select the desired Spot Color [38]. If a System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition is found, it should be selected.

Figure 15 shows a System-wide DeviceN Spot Color definition called Pure Orange, which is based on a CMYK-OVG Spot Color Configuration. However, a CMYK-OV Color Policy was assigned to the Print Item. For this reason, the Lab fallback value [40] is automatically used. The original DeviceN color definition [41], defined in CMYK-OVG, is also displayed in the dialog in the Unused Spot Color Definitions area.

If the Print Item would use a CMYK-OVG Color Policy, the DeviceN Spot Color definition would automatically applied. In this case, the Lab fallback value would then be displayed in the Unused Spot Color Definitions area.

2.6. Lead In/Out

Starting with version 1.8.0, the Lead In/Out settings can be defined system-wide. In the Workflow settings, the quantity and the content of  the Lead In/Out can be determined and stored system-wide. New Production Jobs will be able to use these default settings by default, so that these settings no longer have to be entered manually.

2.6.1. System Settings

In the system-wide settings of the Workflow, the quantity and content: Process Colors, Spot Colors and Technical Colors, can be defined from this version on. These settings can then be used for new Production Jobs and/or Hotfolder settings. Follow the steps to apply these settings system-wide:

  1. Switch to the Administration > Settings menu
  2. Activate the Lead In/Out tab
  3. Define the desired Lead In/Out settings, which should be used by default:
    • Lead In [42] – Use this input field to specify the amount of Lead In to be printed. If you enter »0«, no Lead In is transmitted to the printer.
    • Lead Out [47] – Use this input field to specify the amount of Lead Out to be printed. If you enter »0«, no Lead Out is transmitted to the printer.
    • All Process Colors from Job [43] – Here you can determine whether all Process Colors (if activated) or no Process colors from the Production Job should be rendered or printed.
    • All Spot Colors from Job [44] – Here you can determine whether all Spot Colors (if activated) or no Spot Colors from the Production Job should be rendered or printed.
    • All Technical Colors from Job [45] – Here you can determine whether all Technical Colors (if activated) or no Technical Colors from the Production Job should be rendered or printed.
    • Spot Colors [46] – Alternatively to [44], you can select only specific Spot Colors you want to be rendered or printed. This list contains all System-wide defined Spot Colors.
    • Technical Colors [48] – As an alternative to [45], you can select only specific Technical Colors you want to be rendered or printed. This list contains all System-wide defined Technical Colors.
  4. Save your settings to create or process new Production Jobs with these settings applied.

Selecting individual Spot or Technical Colors

As soon as a Spot Color is selected in the System-wide Spot Colors list [46], the All Spot Colors list from the Production Job [44] is deactivated and vice versa. The same applies to the Technical Colors list [48] and the option All Technical Colors from the Production Job [45] and vice versa

2.6.2. In the Send to Printer dialog

After the desired options have been made in the Workflow settings, new Production Jobs will adopt these settings when they are created and use them by default. The options that are currently activated, can be viewed in the Send to Printer dialog of the Production Job. Settings can be overwritten or changed if necessary in this dialog. The following options are available in the Send to Printer dialog:

  • Lead In [49] – In this input field, the value set under the Settings [42] (Fig. 16) are used by default. This value can be overwritten or changed directly in the Production Job.
  • Lead Out [52] – In this input field, the value set under the Settings [43] (Fig. 16) are used by default. This value can be overwritten or changed directly in the Production Job.
  • All Process Colors from Job [50] – By activating this option, all Process Colors from the Job are also rendered and printed. By default, this option is activated if it was also activated in the Settings (Fig. 16).
  • Spot Colors [51] – This area lists all Spot Colors that are contained in the Production Job (including the imposition). If the option All Spot Colors from Production Job was activated in the system-wide settings (Fig. 16), then all Spot Colors will be selected in this list as well. But if individual system-wide Spot Colors have been selected in the system-wide settings, only these Spot Colors (if available), will be selected in this list.
  • Technical Colors [53] – This area lists all Technical Colors that are contained in the Production Job (including the imposition). If the option All Technical Colors from Job is activated in the system-wide settings (Fig. 16), then all Technical Colors will be selected in this list as well. However, if individual system-wide Technical Colors were selected in the system-wide settings, only these Technical Colors (if available), will be selected in this list.

System-wide settings for Lead In/Out are only used for new Production Jobs

The options set in the system-wide Workflow settings are only used for new Production Jobs that are created after saving your system-wide settings. Existing Production Jobs are not affected by these changes.

2.7. Settings - Color Management

The Color Management tab found under Administration > Settings has been extended in version 1.8.0. The setting ranges for CMYK, RGB and Grayscale Working Color Spaces have been merged into one sub-panel titled, Working Color Spaces and a new sub-panel titled, Output Color Spaces has been introduced.

2.7.1. Working Color Spaces

The Working Color Spaces [54] sub-panel contains internationally used standard ICC profiles for CMYK, RGB and Grayscale. In the settings area, the user can define which Working Color Space should be used for Color Management in the Workflow. In addition, the user can also upload personal ICC profiles that can be used for the Working Color Space.

In version 1.8.0, the two previous setting ranges for CMYK and RGB were merged into one sub-panel with the newly added settings for Grayscale. The user can set the desired ICC profile as default for each color space by clicking on the respective tab [55].

Upload your own Working Color Spaces

If you want to use your own Working Color Space profiles system-wide, you can do so by uploading it in the Working Color Spaces sub-panel. Uploading custom color spaces is available if you activate the checkbox Extended View under the General tab. However, only CMYK, RGB or Grayscale ICC profiles can be uploaded for printing. Multi-channel (n-channel) ICC profiles cannot be uploaded.

2.7.2. Output Color Spaces

In the Color Management tab of the Administration > Settings menu item, a new Output Color Spaces sub-panel is available in addition to the Working Color Spaces sub-panel. In this area, output profiles from other RIP manufacturers can be uploaded [57] and thus either compared with other profiles in the new Gamut Viewer tool or used as reference Color Space for output simulation in the future.

Upload Output Color Spaces

When uploading custom Output Color Spaces, any CMYK ICC profile can be uploaded for printing. In this section, multicolor ICC profiles for printing can also be uploaded, but they must have been created by the Workflow itself. Other manufacturers of multicolor ICC profiles are not supported by the Workflow. Please note that the name of the uploaded profile needs to be unique in the system. Duplicates are not allowed.

2.8. Gamut Viewer

The first version of the Gamut Viewer tool was previously available with version 1.7.9. This enabled the user to visually check the color space of a created Color Profile for accuracy. With Version 1.8, the Gamut Viewer was expanded to include the possibility of comparing two profiles side by side. We've also added additional display functions.

2.8.1. New Functions

Displaying/hiding a gamut Profile or maximum gamut can be accomplished using these new options:

  • Display Gamut [58] – Show/hide the 3D or 2D model visualization.
  • Display Gamut Projection [59] – Show/hide the maximum gamut projection for the selected color space.

If spheres are selected to display the gamut body, two further display options are available. These are:

  • All Values [60] – Displays all extracted measurement points for the outer wireframe of the 3D display.
  • Selected Values [61] – Displays the primary colors or secondary colors for the outer wireframe of the 3D display.
  • Plot Color [62] – Displays individual surfaces or spheres in the corresponding True Colors or as single-colored objects. Especially when comparing two profiles, the single-color display can be very helpful.

2.8.2. Comparing Profiles

By selecting a second profile in the selection menu Profile [B] a second gamut can be displayed in comparison to the selected profile, in Profile [A]. To compare Color Spaces, proceed as follows:

  1. Select the Color > Color Setup menu item.
  2. Select the desired Color Setup in the Color Setup list and double-click on the entry. The Overview tab of the selected Color Setup is displayed.
  3. Select Gamut Viewer [63] in the action bar.

  1. The Gamut Viewer will open, in which the basic profile of the Color Setup is already selected under Profile [A] [64]. The Gamut Volume [65] for the profile is displayed in the Overview area.
  2. Select the desired options for the Profile display in the settings area for Profile [A] [66] (blue area).

  1. Then select the desired entry in the drop-down menu for Profile [B] [67]. Profiles from the following sub-panel areas are available in this menu:
    • Profiles from the Working Color Space CMYK under Administration > Settings > Color Management tab.
    • Profiles from the Working Color Space RGB under Administration > Settings > Color Management tab.
    • Profiles from the Output Color Spaces sub-panel under  Administration > Settings > Color Management tab.
    • A general Lab color profile
    • Individual Profiles from the selected Color Setup.
  2. Selecting the second profile displays the Gamut Volume [68] for Profile [B] and adds an additional setting area Profile [B] [69]. To see the difference between both Profiles it is recommended to display one of the profiles as a wireframe and/or in one color [70].

The Gamut Display is not immediately available

When a profile is opened up for the first time, the values of the outer volume for the gamut are extracted from the measurement data and made available for display. This process will take a few seconds. However, if the gamut for the Profile has already been determined, it can be displayed immediately.

2.9. PDF-Output - Prepress Workflow

With version 1.8, the possibility to transfer an imposition from a Production Job as a PDF to a downstream system is now available for the first time. This allows the following scenarios to be mapped.

Control of external RIPs – The imposition from a Production Job can be sent to a selected target directory via the Send to Printer dialog. This means that third-party RIP station suppliers can be integrated directly with the installation of the Workflow. By setting up Hotfolders on the RIP station(s), print data preparation can be fully mapped in the Workflow and the imposition result can be transferred to the Hotfolder. The imposed PDF is processed according to the Substrate and Color Management settings of the RIP and transferred to the printer.

Reproduction of older print data – After conversion to the Workflow, all print data is kept in one system and new print jobs are generated on the printer using the existing color management system. If print data must be reproduced using the »old« color standard, the print data can be transferred to the former RIP as a PDF file, allowing the print data to be printed according to the color settings used in the old RIP.

Generation of VDP print data – The ability to create variable data print data jobs in the Workflow in conjunction with Adobe Illustrator means that even large variable data print data jobs can be transferred to external RIPs or taken from the Workflow for further use.

Prepress Workflow – Prepress departments can use the Workflow without using color management and HHR-RIP for data management, data preparation, ink calculation, VDP file creation, approval reports, and RIP-independent creation of impositions, and then transfer them to an external system. Due to the high level of integration between the Workflow with leading ERP systems, the Workflow can also be used as an execution application with high automation potential for any system in the printing industry.

Licensing

Since PDF output can be used to control a downstream RIP, the availability of PDF output creation is bound to a multi-line license. For each external RIP that needs to be controlled, an additional multi-line license must be purchased. If the printer is to be controlled directly instead of the RIP at a later date, this can be switched from PDF to the driver at no extra cost if an HHR license is already available.

2.9.1. Creating a PDF printer

Requirements for creating a PDF printer

There are two prerequisites that must be met before a PDF printer can be created or used in the Workflow:

  • Multiline License – If the PDF printer must be created as an additional printer, a Multiline License must be installed. Without a Multiline license no additional printers can be created in the Workflow.
  • External RIP sharing – The PDF printer renders a final output PDF to a specified destination directory. From there the PDF must be processed automatically, in an ideal situation. For this reason, a physical target directory must be set up which can be used for rendering. This target directory must then be set up as a share in the Workflow so that it can be connected to the PDF printer.

The PDF printer is handled similarly to any other printer in the Workflow. There are some differences in the creation process, however. These are explained in this section. Proceed as follows:

  1. Switch to Administration > Printer Setup
  2. Click on the +New button in the action bar to create a printer.
  3. Select the printer Type Adobe - PDF [71] in the dialog.
  4. Enter an appropriate name for the PDF printer. Suitable names are the names of the following RIPs (Onyx 01 or Caldera 01) or the server (Halva, Smolle, etc.).
  5. All other fields are optional. The Best Height is used as the maximum default height for roll Substrates in the Impose Editor.

  1. Click on the Edit icon [72] to set the destination directories for the printer.
  2. Then select your desired Host [73] or the desired IP address where the PDF files are to be transferred in the Assign Destinations to a Printer dialog.
  3. Then determine which Directory (Shares) of the selected Host can be used. Click the right facing arrow [74] for each Share, assigning this Share to the printer as the destination directory.
  4. You determine which target directory is to be used by default by selecting the corresponding target directory in the Assigned Destinations panel and pressing the Set as Default [75] button.
  5. Click on Save in the Assign Destinations to a Printer dialog.

  1. As soon as the dialog for creating the printer is confirmed, the Workflow starts to create the printer in the system. This process can take a few seconds, because some processes are executed in the background.

The following elements are created in the background in different areas of the Workflow:

Configuration of the printer

  • The Ink Family Adobe - PDF with their associated Inks [77] for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, White and Varnish is created in the Workflow. The standard cost per ink is entered with a »0«. If an ink cost calculation is relevant, the ink costs - e.g. for the printer operated by the external RIP, must be entered correctly.
  • In the printer settings, the Color Configuration [76] is automatically created using Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, White and Varnish. The previously created inks are also correctly assigned to the individual Channel Configurations.
  • A Channel Configuration [78] defined in CMYK is automatically created in the printer. This results from the created Color Configuration.
  • A Print Configuration [82] defined as 1200 x 1200 with the same resolution. This print configuration only needs to contain the correct desired resolution. All other fields can be left empty or unchanged.
  • For each Color Configuration (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, White and Varnish) the default drop size of 10 pl is entered. If an ink cost calculation for Print Items needs to be calculated, the drop size should be adjusted correctly, based on the output device, in the Print Configuration.

Substrate Configuration

  • After the printer has been created, a Substrate Category [80] called PDF, a corresponding Substrate [79] called Default Substrate (<name of the PDF printer>) - called Adobe and a corresponding Substrate Definition [82] titled 1400 x 1000 are created automatically. The Substrate is used for a Color Policy and the Substrate Definition is required for the standard imposition size. Additional Substrate Definitions can be added at any time. For each additional PDF printer, a new Substrate with a Substrate Definition is created in the printer.
  • A Color Policy [83] <name of the standard working color space> - (<name of the PDF printer>) is created in the Workflow. The Color Policy is automatically based on the generated Print Configuration, Substrate, and the Working Color Space set as default. If a new Print Configuration is created in the Workflow for the PDF printer, a new Color Policy is also created in the Workflow based on the new Print Configuration. These Color Policies can then be used for production.

After the PDF printer has been created, the automatically generated Color Policies and the printer can be used. You can read more about this in the following sections below.

2.9.2. Send to Printer

A PDF Printer can be used with the Color Policies attached to it, the Substrate for each Article, each Print Item, and each Production Job. The only necessary step is to ensure that the correct Output Configuration: Printer, Print Configuration, Substrate, Substrate Definition, Color Policy and target directory, is used. Problem free Installation can also be performed if an Output Configuration has been selected.

For the user, there are only minor differences when working with a classic printer or a PDF printer. Only limited functions in the Workflow are not supported. The following functions are not supported in the Send to Printer dialog:

  • Lead In/Out – The Lead In/Out function is not supported in combination with a PDF printer, because this function is only executed when rendering a job. The PDF printer, however, only copies the output PDF to a specific destination directory. The document is then rendered by another RIP.
  • Save Ink – The Save Ink feature is applied using the Workflow's Color Management. This function cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either, because the Color Management of the print data is done in the subsequent RIP. If a Save Ink option is available, it must be activated there.
  • DeviceN Color Correction – The DeviceN Color Correction function is applied using the Color Management of the Workflow. This function cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either, since print data color correction is performed in the subsequent RIP.
  • Color Correction – The Color Correction function is applied using the color management of the Workflow. This function cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either, since the color matching of the print data is done in the subsequent RIP.
  • Color Space Conversion – The Color Space Conversion function, e.g.: CMYK Working Color Space or RGB to Substrate, is applied using the color management of the Workflow. This function cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either, because the color matching of the print data takes place in the subsequent RIP.
  • Rendering Intent – The Rendering Intent function is used in the color management of the Workflow. This function cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either, since the color matching of the print data is done in the subsequent RIP.
  • Honor Source Profiles – The function to use selected Source Profiles during rendering is applied in the color management of the Workflow. This function cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either, since the color matching of the print data is done in the subsequent RIP.
  • Enable/Disable Color Management – The function to disable color management is applied in the color management of the Workflow. This function cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either.
  • Render Options – The functions Smooth, Overprint and IHVD are applied in the render process of the Workflow. Again, this feature cannot be used with the PDF printer because rendering is not applied to the PDF.
  • RIP Performance – Since the RIP process is not performed by the Workflow, this feature cannot be used in combination with the PDF printer either.
  • Create raster data locally – Since the RIP process is not performed by the Workflow, this feature cannot be used with the PDF printer.
Handling Spot Colors

Spot Colors in the document to be printed are preserved when using the PDF printer. This means that the Spot Colors are not converted to the Output Color Space. The way Spot Colors are transferred to the printer is determined by the downstream RIP software that transfers the file to the printer.

However, Spot Color definitions can be created and used in the Workflow for Spot Colors in the document. If a document contains Spot Colors, they can be modified or mapped as usual. DeviceN Spot Colors can also be used.

When a document is sent to the PDF printer

  • If alternate colors for the Spot Color are defined in CMYK, RGB or Lab, the currently chosen alternate color value of the Spot Color is written into the PDF.
  • In the case where a DeviceN Spot Color definition has been created, the Lab fallback value for the Spot Color definition is written into the PDF.

This means that all set Spot Color values will be present in the generated output PDF. The RIP software can use the alternative Spot Color values generated by the Workflow for rendering.

2.9.3. Using the PDF Printer for creating Ink Cost Reports

If a PDF printer needs to be used for an ink cost calculation, the resolutions and drop sizes in the Print Configuration and the price for each ink must be adjusted. Proceed as follows:

Step 1: Change the resolution in the Print Configuration

  1. Switch to the Administration > Printer Setup menu.
  2. Select the PDF Printer in the list and open it.
  3. Create a new configuration in the Print Configuration sub-panel by clicking on New [84] in the footer of the panel.
  4. In the Add Print Configuration dialog, select the default Print Configuration [85].
  5. Then change the X and Y resolution [87] and adapt the name in the Print Mode input field [86].
  6. Save your settings.

When the settings are saved, a new Print Configuration and a matching Color Policy are created. This Color Policy can now also be used for ink cost calculation.

Step 2: Change drop size in the Print Configuration

  1. Switch to Administration > Printer Setup.
  2. Select the PDF printer in the list and open it.
  3. Select an existing Print Configuration in the Print Configuration sub-panel.
  4. Click on Edit Mapping [85], which opens the Print Configuration dialog for entering the Drop Index and Size.
  5. Use this dialog to specify the desired drop size per color [89].
  6. Save your settings, and the entered drop sizes will be used when calculating the ink consumption.

Step 3: Change ink prices for individual inks

  1. Switch to Administration > All Inks.
  2. Select the PDF Ink Family [90].
  3. Select the Ink [91] to be edited.
  4. Select Default Cost and click on Edit [93] to enter the desired cost. Click +New [92] to create a custom ink cost.
  5. Save your settings.

2.10. Use a Color Setup for multiple Substrates

Up until version 1.8.0, Color Setups were permanently mapped to a Substrate. Per Substrate, several Color Policies can be created, which are only available for that specific Substrate. Until now, if a Color Policy should be made available for other Substrates, the Color Setup had to be duplicated and the desired Substrate changed. Starting with version 1.8.0, several Substrates can be assigned to a Color Setup.

To use a Color Setup for multiple Substrates, proceed as follows:

  1. Switch to Color > Color Setup.
  2. In the list of Color Setups, select a Color Setup that you want to use for several Substrates.
  3. Select Edit in the action bar, which opens the Edit Color Setup dialog.
  4. Click on the Edit icon [94] next to the Substrate drop-down.

  1. This opens the Assign Substrates to Color Setup dialog where you can perform the mapping:  
    • Select a Substrate Category [95] to filter the list of Substrates.
    • Click on the right facing arrow [96] to assign the desired Substrate to the Color Setup.
    • Click the left facing arrow [97] to remove a Substrate from the list.
  2. Save your settings.

After saving your settings, the Substrates that are linked to the Color Setup are saved. The Mapped Substrates [98] are also displayed in a separate column in the Color Setup list. By hovering the mouse over this column, all assigned Substrates are listed in a ToolTip [99].

When creating or editing a Production Job, the same Color Policies can now be used with different Substrates.

2.11. Fixups

In the course of the development new Fixups were added and existing Fixups were extended in functionality and improved usability.

2.11.1. New Fixups

In version 1.8.0 some new Fixups, which were requested by many customers in the Label and Large Format environment, were implemented.

Add White outline for colored areas

Adds a white outline, defined as: CMYK 0/0/0/0, for selected color areas to reduce color bleeding in transitions with water-based inks. The following parameters are available:

  • Select Color – You can select either CMYK or a Spot Color. If CMYK is selected, the CMYK value can be specified in the input fields below.  If Spot Color is selected, you can select the desired Spot Color in the Select Spot Color drop-down menu.
  • Apply to – Select whether Vector Only, Text Only or Text and Vectors should be targeted. This allows you to apply white only the desired areas.

The location and the weight of the white outline can be determined with the following parameters:

  • Line Width – Enter the Line Width in points (pt).
  • Contour Alignment – Specify whether the contour should be created in the center, outside or inside the object.
  • Tint Value – Determine the opacity of the Tint using a percentage.
  • Reduce to outer border – By selecting this option, the contour will be created only on the outer edge of the shape. If this option is deactivated, the Dieline (letter interior) of an "O", for example, will also have a white outline.

Extract Print Items from Page

Creates a multi-page PDF comprised of individual Print Items found on the page. This Fixup will only work correctly when the individual Print Items on the page are defined as a Dieline using a Spot Color.

Use this Fixup if, for example, you want to process individual Print Items that have been combined on a single page individually. The following parameters are available:

  • Spot Color – Select the Spot Color that will be used as the cutting boundary for individual Print Items.
  • Additional Area Left/Right/Up/Down – Use this to determine how much additional space should be added outside of the item. It is recommended that you enter these values especially if the designs are defined by rectangular cut contours. The value "0" would trim the individual designs exactly at the edge of the cut contour.
  • Clip Print Item – If this checkbox is activated, the Additional area values are ignored and the Print Items are trimmed exactly on the cut contour. Select this option if the Print Items are surrounded by irregular, free-form Dielines.
  • Additional Bleed for clipped items – Enter a value for the bleed, should only be used in conjunction with Clip Print Item.

Add Pole Pockets

Adds Pole Pockets on the upper and/or lower edge of the Print Item on the front. The Print Item on the back is a mirrored version of the front. You can decide how much of the area on the backside should overlap on the front side.

The following parameters are available for creating Pole Pockets:

  • Hem Top – Use this parameter to define the size of the Pole Pocket (hem) on the top edge of the Print Item. Entering a value of "0" will not add a hem on the top.
  • Hem Bottom – Use this parameter to define the size of the Pole Pocket (hem) on the bottom of the Print Item. Entering the a value of  "0" will not add a hem on the bottom.
  • Additional Overlap Top – Use this setting to define the dimensions of the overlap, this is the area where the Print Item on the back is mirrored on the front on the top edge. Entering the value "0" will not add an overlap to the top.
  • Additional Overlap Bottom – Use this setting to define the dimensions of the overlap, this is the area where the Print Item on the back side is mirrored on the front on the bottom edge. Entering the value "0" will not add an overlap on the bottom.

Add a second Dieline

This Fixup adds an additional Dieline at a specified distance from the existing Dieline. In addition, this Fixup can be used to rename the existing Dieline so that the usual company name for Dielines is used. The following options are available:

  • Dieline – Select the existing Spot Color defined for the original Dieline.
  • Rename Dieline – Select this checkbox if you want to rename the existing Dieline name.
  • New Spot Color Name – Select the Technical Color to replace the existing Spot Color name. This drop-down menu is only active when the Rename Dieline option is checked.
  • Add Dieline – Check this box if you want to add an additional Dieline. You can specify the following additional parameters:
    • Spot Color Name – Select the desired Spot Color name.
    • Offset – Specify the offset with which the new Dieline should be created relative to the existing Dieline.
    • Layer Name – Specify the name of the layer on which to create the new Dieline.
    • Processing Step Group/Type – Select the processing step to which the new Dieline will be added.

Availability

This Fixup is available to all customers in the Create Dieline selection area in the footer of the Technical Colors panel in Print Item view. The Fixup is also available when using Fixup Chains for all license holders that have access to Fixup Chains.

2.11.2. Improvement to existing Fixups

For some existing Fixups, functions were added or the user interface was improved.

Remove Spot Color

With the help of this Fixup, selected Spot Colors for objects defined in a Spot Color can be deleted. From this version on, previously selected Spot Colors are deactivated in the drop-down menu. Spot Colors can therefore no longer be selected multiple times.

Resize TrimBox

This Fixup changes the dimensions of the TrimBox (+ = enlarged; - = reduced). Select the unit of measurement to be used and enter the value at the top. If you want to enter different values for Top, Bottom, Left and Right, you must unlock the lock.

Starting with this version, the TrimBox can finally be made larger than the BleedBox and CropBox. In doing so, the BleedBox and CropBox are also enlarged.

Split a long Print Item into several pages

This Fixup splits a long Print Item into a multi-page document. The length of each page can be determined by entering the length or by entering the number of pages, each of which are of equal length.

From this version on, it is possible to choose whether the division should be made according to page height (this was the previous implementation) or according to the number of pages. If you select division by number of pages, you can specify the number of pages, and the desired page length is calculated and displayed automatically. Additionally, the desired unit of measurement can be defined.

Change Tint Value for Spot Color

When this Fixup is executed, the existing Spot Color is removed and replaced by a traced color shape in the desired tonal value.

From this version on, it is no longer necessary to enter the name of the Spot Color. The name of the Spot Color can now be selected in the Select Source Spot Color drop-down menu.

  • GET /api/v1/articles/{id}/preflightResult – The preflight results of an uploaded article can be retrieved starting with this version. With the URL parameter severity= the weighting can be defined. The possibilities are: INFO, WARNING and ERROR. These correspond to the output of the preflight results in the frontend. If the parameter is not specified, all results are output.

  • GET /api/v1/fixups/{id} – The description of data corrections is shown in the output.

3. Improvements

Version 1.8.0 of the Workflow offers even more minor improvements, these are:

3.1. PSB and SVG Support

From version 1.8.0 onwards, PSB files can be uploaded in the Workflow. These file types are also supported at all upload positions in the Workflow. In addition, SVG files can also be uploaded into the Workflow from this version on.

Use caution with SVG files

SVG files can be very complex and can contain constructs that are not supported by the Workflow. These include external links, scripts or animations in SVG files that cannot be resolved and processed correctly.

3.2. Deleting Substrates

From this version on, Substrate Categories, Substrates and Substrate Definitions can be deleted in the Workflow. All elements in the Workflow that use a Substrate to be deleted are not deleted, as these elements are automatically assigned to a system Substrate. The following options can be performed:

  • Deleting Substrate Definitions – When deleting Substrate Definitions, links to printers are also removed. If the default Substrate Definition is deleted, it will also be removed from the linked Substrate.
  • Deleting Substrates – When deleting a Substrate, all linked Substrate Definitions are also deleted. The link to the default Color Policy is also removed. If it is a default Substrate, then it will also be removed from the linked Substrate Category.
  • Deleting Substrate Categories – When deleting a Substrate Category, all linked Substrate Definitions and all linked Substrates are also deleted.

After installing version 1.8.0, the Workflow automatically defines a System Substrate Category. This Substrate Category contains a System Substrate and this in turn contains a System Substrate Definition. These System Substrates cannot be deleted by the user. When a Substrate is deleted, all elements that used this Substrate are rewritten to the System Substrate, so that the associated data, e.g. Production Jobs, Profiles, Articles, etc. remain valid.

Deleting Linked Data

If all related data (e.g. Production Jobs, Articles, Profiles, etc.) for deleted Substrates are also deleted, the user has the possibility to filter these lists according to the defined System Substrate. These filtered elements can then be deleted manually.

3.3. Lasercomb ProDigi Cutting Device

With 1.8.0 the integration of the Lasercomb cutting device of the ProDigi series with all necessary configuration parameters was implemented.

3.3.1. Adding the Lasercomb ProDigi cutter in the Workflow

Before the ProDigi can be used in the Workflow for Production Jobs, the cutting device must be created in the Workflow. To do this, please follow these four steps:

Step 1: Set up a Share for the Lasercomb ProDigi in the Workflow

The target directory of the ProDigi must first be made available for the Workflow. A Host and a Share must be created under Administration > File Management. Details on this topic can be found in this chapter: Manage Shares and Folders.

Step 2: Create the cutting device in the Workflow

  1. Switch to Administration > Cutter Devices.
  2. Open the Add Cutter dialog by clicking on + New.

  1. Select the following parameters in the opened dialog:
    • Device Type – Select ProDigi.
    • Name – Enter a unique name for the cutting device. If you have two devices of the same type, you should also create the device twice with different names to find unique names and target directories in the Workflow.
    • Serial Number – Optionally enter the serial number of the device, which makes sense in case two cutters from the same manufacturer are used.
    • Host – Select the Host as defined in step 1.
    • Destination – Select the target directory as defined in step 1.
  2. Finalize the process by clicking on Save.

Step 3: Check the configuration of the ProDigi

After creating the cutting device, the standard configuration ProDigi | DIN | Sphere-Marks is made available under Parameter Sets [100]. This configuration can be used by default.

For this configuration, the following settings are available in the Parameters [101] panel:

  • Cutter File Type – Determines the Cutter file type. For this cutting device only DXF is offered at the moment.
  • Barcode content File Name – Determines where (by default at the beginning of the file name) the name of the cut file is written in the barcode, if available.
  • Mirror Horizontally – Can be activated if the cutting paths are to be mirrored horizontally.
  • Mirror Vertically – Can be activated if the cutting paths should be mirrored vertically.
  • Rotate Clockwise – Optionally the cutting file can be rotated by 90° (default - 0°)

Further settings for the Parameters can be entered and saved in the Impose Editor. If necessary, user-defined configurations can also be created and used. For more information on this topic, refer to the sections Using Cutting Devices in Production Jobs and Editing and Saving Cutting Device Configurations.

Step 4: Assign technical colors to cutting tools

Before the Lasercomb ProDigi can be used for cutting, System-wide Technical Colors of the Workflow have to be assigned to the cutting tools. Proceed as follows:

  1. Select the previously created ProDigi in the Device panel list.
  2. In the PenTypes [102] panel, which is located below the Devices panel, all available Pen Types from the Cutting Devices can be found.

  1. Select a Pen Type [103] to be used from the list.
  2. Then click on Edit [104] in the footer of the panel, which opens the Edit Cutter Pen Type dialog.

  1. In the dialog, select a Technical Colors from the drop-down menu Available Technical Colors [107] that are to be bound to the selected Pen Type [105]. If several Technical Colors are to be bound to one Pen Type, repeat the step you just performed. Technical Colors that have already been bound to a Pen Type are grayed out in the list. The previously bound Pen Types are listed under the Mapped Colors [106] area.
  2. If you have bound all used Technical Colors to a Pen Type, click on Save.

3.3.2. Use Lasercomb ProDigi for Production Jobs

To learn more about how Cutting Devices are used in the Workflow please refere to version 1.7.6 of the release notes.

3.3.3. Available Parameters

If the settings of the standard configuration do not suit you, you can create and save user-defined configurations in the Impose Editor. Find out more about this topic by reading the section Changing and Saving Configurations for Cutting Devices.

3.4. New Routine to delete Production Jobs

As of version 1.8.0, a new Delete Production Jobs routine is available in the Workflow. This routine irrevocably deletes all Production Jobs that are older than a defined date.

This new system routine is deactivated by default and can only be activated using the Extended View mode of the Workflow. Extended View Mode can be activated under Administration > Settings > General > General Settings. After the routine is activated manually, you can define which Production Jobs, older than xxx, should be deleted regularly and permanently.

3.5. Small Improvements

The following improvements have also been implemented in this version.

3.5.1. Workflow

Changing the resolution for a print configuration

With the introduction of PDF outputs, the possibility to change the resolution for a print configuration was made available.

Assign Destinations to a Printer

A printer can contain several different target directories in the Workflow. A new user interface is provided for this function from this version on. If a new printer is created or an existing printer is edited, these target directories can be defined. Select the desired host or IP address and then move the desired shares into the list of assigned target directories by clicking the right arrow. Finally, a target directory must be set as default.

Available ICC Profiles

The information which profiles have been created for a profiling is available in a new way from this version on. If a profile is opened that has already been completed, the calculated color strategies are listed in the profile overview. A click on the color strategy opens a dialog that displays all profiles in the color strategy. There you can also download all generated profiles.

Substrate Thickness

From version 1.8, this is offered in the material in addition to the availability in the material characteristic. In combination with the possibility of assigning several materials to a profile, materials of different thickness can be created and processed with the same profile.

Selected rotations in the Send to Printer dialog also change the width and height information in version 1.8 and later.

Enhancements in the LFP job ticket

For communication with a connected inspection camera, the external production job number is transferred in the job ticket.

Send multiple Production Jobs to the printer

If several production jobs are transferred to the printer together, the output template can now also be selected in the Transfer to Printer dialog and applied to all production jobs. The preview of the motif is also displayed in this dialog, even though the production order was not mounted.

3.5.2. Impose Editor

Adaptation of the timestamp to the format stored in the system

Labels that rely on date and time information from metadata are now created in the set time and date format of the General tab in Administration > Settings.

4. Bug Fixes

The following errors (bugs) have been fixed with this release.

4.1. Adobe Illustrator Plug-in

Static Barcodes: Problems occurred when creating Static Barcodes with Adobe Illustrator version 24.2.3. The process could not be completed successfully. This error has been fixed. (PXT-950)

Variable Images with a White Background: When rendering Variable Images with a white background, an error occurred when sending to the printer. This bug has also been fixed. (DW-4023)

Selecting Output Templates in the Plug-in: Output Templates when creating Production Jobs could not be selected in the Plug-in. This error has been fixed. (PXT-949)

Check-out icon disappears: As soon as a filter was active in the Production Job list, the check-out icon could no longer be activated. Also, double-clicking on the Production Job deactivated the check-out icon. (PXT-948)

Swap background & foreground of QR Codes: When executing this function, fine lines were displayed in the QR code. This error has been fixed. (DW-1470)

4.2. Workflow

Check-in JPEG2000: In some cases there were problems uploading files into the Workflow that contained JPEG200 images. (ZCM-1259)

Variable data with CSV: The option "First row is a the header row" had to be activated, in some cases an error occurred when rendering the Production Job. This bug has been fixed. (DW-4263)

System routines: After updating the Workflow the defined system routines were reset. This error is fixed in this version. (DW-4265)

Varnish: When using certain printer types (Rho roll and Rhotex), an empty separation called "Varnish" was created in the output, although Varnish was not defined. This behavior has been fixed. (DW-3991)

Importing Profiles: The original defined target directory was also imported when importing a Profile (Color Setup). Consequently, the user was then not able to select a new target directory. An additional error, when the Substrate profile was imported, it was corrupted in some cases. These two errors have been fixed. (DW-3722 & DW-3713)

Import Measurement Data: When importing a Profile in the Measurement data incl. profiling templates mode, an internal error occurred which imported the Profile incorrectly. (DW-3841)

Send To Printer Error: The error Named color resource with ID requires BackdropAutoSeparations=true; has also been fixed in this version. (DW-1227)

Fixup Error: The error First a pdfEngine analysis must be performed has also been fixed in this version. (DW-848)

Save Ink in the Output Configuration: When changing the ink configuration under Production Job > Output Settings tab, the target directory also changed. This bug has been fixed. (DW-4212)

Hotfolder Auto-Nesting: If a cutter was used in Auto-Nesting Mode, the incorrect size was used when imposing Print Items. This error has also been fixed. (DW-4063)

Production Job List: When switching between the pages in the list view, Production Jobs would often display the wrong preview thumbnails. This behavior has been optimized with this version. (DW-4054)

Deleting Grid Charts & Color books: When deleting Grid Charts and Color Books, the complete reference data was not deleted. This behavior has been revised. (DW-3934)

Fixup: Convert Registration Color to CMYK: This Fixup has been adjusted because problems occurred during execution in rare cases. (DW-4015)

Reprint Job: As soon as an imposition was created, this function was suddenly activated. This function should only be activated as soon as the Production Job has been sent to the printer. (DW-4234)

Order List: The defined number of entries per page were reset after selecting and reloading the page. This error has been fixed. (DW-3705)

Profile default target directory: In some cases, the default target directory from a Profile was not automatically selected in the subsequent Print Calibration Chart dialogs. (DW-4277)

Full text search in all list views: If the user entered a full text search in list view, and then the text was removed and the page was reloaded, the previously removed search text was displayed again. (DW-4271)

4.3. Impose Editor

Cutting Devices in Manual Mode: When trimming the sheet, the Cutting Device Registration Marks were slightly clipped. This error is now fixed. (IMPOSE-1920)

Step & Repeat Head Turn Alignment: If placed Print Items were scaled, the defined Head Turn alignment was not executed correctly. This error has been fixed. (IMPOSE-1968)

Step & Repeat automatic Horizontal Spacing: When activating Horizontal Auto spacing, Print Items were placed partially outside the sheet. (IMPOSE-1911)

Multipage documents: Multipage documents are marked as "multipage" in the Impose Editor. However, the Number of Pages was showing as 1 in the Print Item information in the File Manager. This error has been fixed. (IMPOSE-2051)

Captions: The »Contact Person« placeholder, which is listed under Order Item, was not working correctly. This error has been fixed. (IMPOSE-2025)

On October 30, this Hotfix was released due to the following error:

Fotoba Cutter in Tiling: When using a Fotoba Cutter in »Tiling«  mode, the cutting lines were placed within the defined overlap. This error has been fixed.

On November 4th, this Hotfix was released due to the following error:

SPC Print Configurations: Predefined names of the Print Configurations have been renamed. These are available when new Print Configurations are created for the printer.

Print Item Previews: Print Item thumbnails (PNGs) were calculated and generated using the wrong resolution. This caused large thumbnail file size.

Vutek Printing Systems: In the Job Ticket, "Pages" were transferred instead of "Copies". This error has been fixed.

On November 6th, this Hotfix was released due to the following error:

Spot Colors: If system-wide Spot Colors also occur in Substrate-specific Spot Colors, the system-wide Spot Color definitions were automatically used in the Production Job, even if the Substrate matches. This error has been fixed. The correct order is: Print Item (motive)-level Spot Color definitions, customer-specific Spot Colors, Substrate-specific Spot Colors, system-wide Spot Colors, Spot Color Libraries and Spot Color definitions in the PDF.

On November 18th, this Hotfix was released due to the following errors:

Fixup Chains: Previously entered values within Fixups were deleted seemingly at random. This error has been fixed.

Multipage Nesting using a Cutting Device: The Cutfile was only generated for the first page and copied to the Cutting Device. From this version on, a separate Cutfile is now generated for each page.

Adding Dielines in the Impose Editor: When adding Dielines in the Impose Editor, sometimes the Dieline was doubled. This caused the Cutting Devices to consequently cut the Substrate twice.

PDF Printer: The Color Policies from a PDF printer could not be selected and used in the Impose Editor.
