Updated on

Learn in this article,

  • which requirements must be met for this Fixup and
  • how to apply the Fixup.

1. Introduction

The Rotate and/or Mirror Pages Fixup is available in the Workflow. This Fixup aims to rotate and/or flip pages clockwise or counterclockwise in 90° increments.

2. General

This Fixup aims to rotate or mirror either: all pages, even pages or odd pages of a multipage Print Item or Article.

This Fixup can be found in the footer of the Document Information and User–defined Fields area under the Rotate and Mirror Fixup Group for Articles, Jobs, and Orders, or in the Data Preparation tab.

3. Fixup Description

With this Fixup, a single Print Item or all pages of a print file can be rotated and/or mirrored and additionally, only every second page, an odd or even number of pages of a multi–page print file can be rotated and/or mirrored.

However, if you only want to rotate or mirror the Print Item, you must select No Rotation under the Rotate option or No Mirroring under the Mirror option.

3.1. Requirements and Functionality

For this Fixups to do what it promises, the following requirements must be met:

  • the print file can be single-page or multi-page
  • the print file is available in the current rotation - i.e. no rotation factor has been applied to the page, which means that the page is only rotated for display.

For Rotating and/or Mirroring select from the following options:

  • Template [1] – setting that are selected in this dialog can be saved a stemplate and applied to other Articles/Print Items.

3.1.1. Rotate

To rotate a Print Item select from the following two options.

  • Rotate [2] – Use this option to determine the angle (in degrees) in which the Print Item should be rotated. The following options are available here:
    • no rotation – the Print Item isn't rotated.
    • 180° – rotates the Print Item 180°.
    • 90° counterclockwise – rotates the Print Item 90° to the left.
    • 90° clockwise – rotates the Print Item 90° to the right.
    • 0° (Apply page rotation parameter only) – removes the current Print Items rotation. For this you need to know that a PDF in Acrobat Pro can be assigned a rotation of 90°, 180° and 270°, but it will only affect how it is displayed in Acrobat Pro. However, keep in mind that the Print Item is not rotated. By default, when the Print Item is uploaded to the Workflow, the display rotation is removed in the pdf and set to 0°.
    • Variable Content [6] – select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the rotation should be retrieved. The following value must be found in the selected field to execute the rotation:
      • None_Rotate
      • 180
      • 270
      • 90
      • ApplyPageRotateOnly
  • Apply to [3] – The Apply to section which is directly below the Rotate drop–down list, affects only the rotation. This allows individual Print Item to be rotated and mirrored individually. The following options are available:
    • All Pages – Applies the value selected in the Rotate drop-down to all pages.
    • Even Pages – Applies the value selected in the Rotate drop-down to all even pages. Note that the option does not refer to the pagination in the document, but in this case to every second page starting from page 2.
    • Odd pages – Applies the value selected in the Rotate drop-down to all odd pages. Note that the option does not refer to the pagination in the document, but in this case to every second page starting with page 1.
    • Variable Content [7] – select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the rotation should be retrieved. The following value must be found in the selected field to execute the rotation:
      • Always
      • Even
      • Odd

3.1.2. Mirror

For mirroring a Print Item select from the following two options

  • Mirror [4] – determines the axis around which the Print Item should be mirrored. The following options are available:
    • No Mirroring – does not mirror the Print Item.
    • Horizontally – mirrors the Print Item along the horizontal axis (i.e. around the vertical axis).
    • Vertically – mirrors the Print Item along the vertical axis (i.e. around the horizontal axis).
    • Variable Content [7] – select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the mirroring should be retrieved. The following value must be found in the selected field to execute the mirroring:
      • Non_Flip
      • Horizontally
      • Vertically
  • Apply to [5] – the entry in the selection list only affects mirroring, which means that rotating and mirroring can be applied to individual pages independently of each other. The following selection options are available:
    • All Pages – Applies the value selected in the Mirror drop-down to all pages.
    • Even Pages – Applies the value selected in the Mirror drop-down to all even pages. Note that the option does not refer to the pagination in the document, but in this case to every second page starting from page 2.
    • Odd pages – Applies the value selected in the Mirror drop-down. Note that the option does not refer to the pagination in the document, but in this case to every second page starting with page 1.
    • Variable Content [8] – select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the mirroring should be retrieved. The following value must be found in the selected field to execute the mirroring:
      • Always
      • Even
      • Odd

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this function, you can refer to the example file "Irregular_Shape_Start.pdf". The following states can be mapped with the two functions in this Fixups:

When the 90° clickwise entry is selected in the Rotate option, the print file "Irregular_Shape_Rotate.pdf" would be created. The selected values would lead to the following result:

Figure 4: Left: initial file; Right: Print Item rotated by 90° clockwise

When the Horizontal entry is selected in the Mirror option, the print file "Irregular_Shape_Mirroring.pdf" would be created. The selected values would lead to the following result:
