Setting Up Printing Environment in Device Connector

Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • how to set up a printing environment in Device Connector and
  • which parameters need to be configured.

1. Introduction

For print jobs to be processed and forwarded to an output device, you first have to create the printer in the Device Connector ControlCenter. Only after a successful setup will the device be available for selection in subsequent steps.

When creating a printer, a new printing environment is either created or configured. This environment defines all relevant information required for communication between the software and the printer. This includes, in particular, the selected printer model, the connection type, and device-specific parameters.

A correct setup ensures that print data is properly transferred to the desired output device. Without a properly configured print environment, it is not possible to output rendered data from the Workflow application.

2. Creating a Printer

After the Device Connector has been successfully installed, create the printer that should be controlled via the application. The following steps are required:

  1. Open the Device Connector ControlCenter.
  2. Once the program is open, you will be on the tab Home [1]. Now open the Configurator [2] by clicking the corresponding icon.

  1. Opening the Configurator automatically opens the Print Environment Manager. In this dialog, a print environment can be imported or created. Click Add [3] to create a new print environment.

  1. The dialog Add new print environment now opens. In this dialog, click Add Queue and then Next to add a new queue.
  2. Next, select the desired printer driver from the list. In this example, the driver HP Latex 2700 W CMYKW was used.
  3. Click Next [4] to configure the new queue.

  1. In the next step, establish the connection to the printer. This step can vary significantly depending on the selected driver, as the type of device interface may differ depending on the manufacturer and model.

  1. Once all parameters have been entered, click Next.
  2. Next, assign a Name to the new printer environment. Typically, this name includes a reference to the printer and the print mode. The environment name corresponds to the print configurations within the Workflow application. Repeat the same procedure for the queue name, which usually corresponds to the printer name of the device within the Workflow application. Click Finish [5] to save the settings and continue.

  1. The dialog Print Environment Settings now opens. This dialog contains all settings related to the printer configuration. Adjust the settings as needed. To start, select a print setting. Additional settings can be configured after this step.
  2. Finally, click OK.

  1. Once at least one printer (queue) or print environment has been configured, you have to activate the printer or print environment. To do this, return to the Device Connector ControlCenter.
  2. Switch to the tab Queues and select the printer that was previously created.
  3. In the section Start mode, select Online [6].
  4. Then set the Window Mode to Tray Icon [7]. This ensures that processing for this device starts automatically when Windows starts. Furthermore, the spooling window is displayed only as an icon in the taskbar. This prevents a cluttered desktop at the start. Repeat this step for all created queues.
