1.1 Application and Advantages

Updated on

The PDF Editor is a desktop application for Windows and macOS, which was developed as a standalone application for the native analysis and editing of PDF files in a prepress environment. Additionally, users can connect the PDF Editor directly to Workflows from Durst and OnPoint. Thereby, it is possible to quickly open and edit print data and upload it to the Workflow as a corrected version.

1. Applications

The PDF Editor desktop application was developed for users who need to analyze, correct, or optimize print data for print output. Therefore the PDF Editor strongly focuses on prepress tasks in digital or conventional printing environments and not on editing PDF files for document exchange in the office.

The PDF Editor desktop application is not a creative or design tool for creating print products. However, the application can merge technical drawings with print data for the packaging industry.

As the PDF Editor operates as a desktop application, it can be operated independently of any other system and provides the user with the full range of prepress functionalities.

The PDF Editor also provides a connection to the Durst Workflow and OnPoint | PrePress Workflow and other OnPoint Workflows , users can exchange print data directly with the Workflows, without having to separately extract the print file from the Workflows. Although the Workflow already provides countless Data Preparation Fixups, there are always use cases for manual editing.

While Fixups can only process entire files in the Workflows, OnPoint PDF Editor can make small changes to individual objects in just seconds. Thus, the PDF Editor closes the gap between automated processing and the need for manual correction.

Furthermore, the PDF Editor addresses the needs of prepress staff, graphic designers, and even salespersons who:

  • want to visualize print data in the printing process,
  • want to analyze print data,
  • need to correct the print data,
  • need to optimize complex print data,
  • need to enhance print data for the printing process.

2. Advantages compared to other PDF Editors

Many prepress operators use a wide variety of tools to prepare print data, such as

  • Adobe Acrobat Pro combined with paid plug-ins for better object editing in a PDF file
  • Adobe InDesign and the usage of scripts for data preparation, but without the ability of minor manual adjustments in the PDF file
  • Adobe Illustrator with the limitation of not being able to handle all PDF constructs and color spaces
  • Cost-intensive native PDF Editors from other vendors whose range of functions reaches far beyond the basic functions of PDF analysis, PDF editing, and PDF optimization and can therefore be used by many users only with a great deal of training.

The advantages of the PDF Editor are

  • The basic functionalities like analyzing, editing, and optimizing PDF files are provided in an easy-to-use interface
  • the usability by easily accessing various functionalities
  • The range of functionalities has been reduced to the essentials in an application developed specifically for the prepress area
  • The costs for the program can be reduced to a minimum
  • The combination with Workflows - a program is available with which the print data does not have to be extracted from the Workflow. Thus, a continuous flow - without tons of file versions on your local system - can be ensured.
