Below you will find a detailed description of all changes in the menu items New Features, as well as Improvements.

2. New Features

With version 1.4.0 some new features are available.

2.1. Delete Objects outside Page Box

In many cases, Print Data is created by designers in a very complex way and when creating the PDF file. Mostly, no consideration is given to optimizing the print file and removing unnecessary information. When rendering or displaying complex data, information must be rendered which is actually not visible because, for example, only a section of the file is required.

With the new function, PDF files can be freed from objects that are completely outside a selected Page Box. This will speed up the processing when opening the PDF file and also the further editing in automated Workflows.

To eliminate objects that are completely outside of a Page Box, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the PDF file in the PDF Editor.
  2. In order to find out which objects are outside, activate the option Show Objects outside "PageBox" in the View and Analyze tab. In addition, you can also switch to the path view. To do this, select the Wireframe command in View > VIEW Mode or press the keyboard shortcut  Ctrl + Command + 3 (macOS) or  Strg + Shift + 3  (Windows).

Figure 1: Complex file with more than 60.000 path points in the Wireframe View

  1. Switch to the Edit tab and select Delete objects outside PageBox [1] in the Actions area. You can also find the command of the same name in the Edit menu.
  2. In the Delete objects outside PageBox dialog, select the Page Box that is suitable for the current PDF file. In practice, the BleedBox [2] should always be the preferred choice, if the Page Boxes are set correctly.

  1. Press Delete [3] to complete the action.
  2. The operation is completed with the display of the dialog indicating how many objects have been eliminated.

2.2. Mirror Page

As soon as you are to prepare print data for transfer printing, mirroring pages is a central function. With version 1.4.0, two new commands are available to the user in the Page menu:

  • Flip selected page horizontally - flips the current page on the vertical axis.
  • Flip selected page vertically - flips the current page on the horizontal axis.

2.3. Highlight XObject references

XObjects are a common construct in PDF files, with which recurring page content is referenced and can thus be saved in an optimized manner with regard to data volume. In the PDF Editor, when a file is opened, the user is notified that referenced objects are located on this page. Before 1.4.0, the user had only two options:

  • Resolve XObject references - this resolves XObjects, which can drastically increase the amount of memory required for that file.
  • Not to resolve XObject references - the content of the PDF file could not be edited.

With version 1.4.0 the user is given the possibility on the one hand to display where XObjects are located as well as to select, move and delete XObjects. On the other hand other PDF objects can now be edited nevertheless. Proceed as follows.

  1. Open the print file
  2. As soon as XObjects are located on the page which is be rendered, the following dialog is displayed.

Figure 5: Display of information about XObjects when opening a print file

  1. Do not resolve the XObjects by confirming the dialog by clicking No.
  2. Open the Display and Analyze tab and activate the new option Highlight XObject references [4] in the Options settings area.
  3. This will display an orange shaded area for each XObject.

Figure 6: Visualization of the individual XObjects in a PDF file

  1. You can select an XObject [5] with the Selection Tool and change or delete the position and size of the XObject. All PDF objects which are not referenced in XObjects [6] can be selected and edited.

3. Improvements

In addition to the major new features, other improvements have also been implemented in version 1.4.0.

3.1. Color Space "Bitmap"

In addition to all Device Color Spaces CMYK, RGB and Grayscale, all ICC-based Color Spaces as well as Spot Colors, the Bitmap Color Space is also displayed in the Color Spaces [7] settings area as of version 1.4.0.

Figure 7: The View and Analyze tab with the display of the Bitmap Color Space

Pipette Tool and "Bitmap" Color Space

The possibility to read a Bitmap image with the Pipette Tool has been added. Note, however, that in the Edit tab the conversion of Color Spaces for images is not yet given!

3.2. Save as image file

PDF files can be saved as PNG, TIFF or JPEG files since some versions. Under macOS the Save as Image File dialog was not operable. With version 1.4.0 the dialog can now also be operated in macOS. Furthermore, options are now only displayed if they are available for the selected format.

If a PNG file is to be created, the following options are available:

  • Resolution - specify the resolution in dpi.
  • Color Space - you can select RGB or Grayscale as the color space.
  • Alpha channel - by activating this option, transparent areas (areas without background) will remain transparent in the PNG file.

Figure 8: The settings for PNG in Export as Image File dialog

If you want to create a TIFF file, the following options are available:

  • Resolution - set the resolution in dpi.
  • Color Space - you can select CMYK, RGB or Grayscale as the Color Space.
  • Alpha channel - by activating this option, transparent areas (areas without background) remain transparent in the TIFF file.

Figure 9: The settings for TIFF in Export as Image File dialog

If you want to create a JPEG file, the following options are available:

  • Resolution - set the resolution in dpi.
  • Color Space - you can select CMYK, RGB or Grayscale as the Color Space.
  • Quality - by activating this option, transparent areas (areas without background) remain transparent in the TIFF file.

3.3. Selecting Objects

Two strategies are available for selecting objects as of version 1.4.0. You can select which one you want to follow in the PDF Editor Preferences in the option Mode for selecting objects [8]. The following strategies are available:

  • All fully or partially captured objects of the selection frame - selects objects that were fully or partially captured by the drawn selection frame. This was the strategy chosen until version 1.4.0.
  • Only fully captured objects of the selection frame - selects only objects that are fully captured by the selection frame. This strategy allows large areas with all the objects to be captured more quickly, without including objects which are located in the background of the selection.

3.4. Create Spot Color Separation / Add Dielines

The function to create a Spot Color Separation and a Dieline for selected objects was introduced for the first time in version 1.3.0. While in previous versions it was only possible to create a congruent Spot Color Separation, in version 1.4.0 the Spot Color Separation as well as the Dieline can be displayed enlarged with corresponding accuracy.

Figure 12: Top: Enlarged Spot Color Separation (white area); Bottom:Dieline with Offset (pink contour)

Reducing the size of the Spot Color Separation / inward offset of the Dieline

The option to reduce the Spot Color Separation or to create a negative offset for Dielines is still being worked on. It is therefore not yet available in version 1.4.0.

3.5. User Interface

In version 1.4.0, changes were made with regard to user interface with partial expansion of the range of functions. The following changes were implemented:

3.5.1. OK and Cancel

According to the conventions, the buttons in modal dialogs under macOS have been moved to the right side.

Figure 13: The Scale Page dialog with the OK and Cancel commands on the right under macOS

3.5.2. Select next / previous object

If you have selected an object in the PDF file, you can select the next object in the PDF hierarchy by pressing the Tab key. Pressing Shift + Tab selects the previous object in the PDF hierarchy.

This function was implemented exactly opposite until version 1.4.0. With version 1.4.0 the behavior is as expected by the user.

3.5.3. Move objects

Selected objects can be moved by pressing the arrow keys. Moving selected objects is available with 1.4.0 as follows:

Unit of length is set to millimeters, centimeters or meters

  • Pressing the arrow key - the object is moved by 1 mm, 1 cm or 1 m
  • Pressing the arrow key while holding down the Shift key - the object is moved by 10 mm, 10 cm or 10 m

Length unit is set to inches, feet or yards

  • Pressing the arrow key - the object is moved by 0.01 in, 0.01 yard or 0.01 feet
  • Pressing the arrow key while holding the Shift key - the object is moved by 0.1 in, 0.1 yard or 0.1 feet

3.5.4. Media Box is not in the Origin - warning

If the Media Box is not in the Origin, a warning triangle [10] with a corresponding note is displayed as of version 1.4.0. The command Set Media Box to Origin... is available in the panel menu [9], which you can use to set the PDF file to its origin again.

Display of "Set Media Box to Origin"

The command "Set Media Box to Origin" is displayed in the Context menu, in the Display panel menu of the Page Boxes settings area, and in the Pages menu only when the Media Box is not in the Origin.

3.5.5. Zoom in on selected objects

The implementation of zooming in by pressing CMD + + (macOS) or Ctrl + + has been changed so that it zooms in on the selected objects and thus displays them in the image section.

3.5.6. Set Page Boxes

With version 1.4.0 the Set Page Boxes dialog is available in a user-friendly version with extended functionality. The following changes have been implemented:

  • Color codes for Page Boxes [11] - to help the user select the correct Page Box more quickly, the familiar color codes for Page Boxes have been added.
  • Current dimensions [13] - display of the current positions and sizes of the individual Page Boxes.
  • Set MediaBox to Origin [12] - when changing the positions of the Page Boxes, it is easily possible that the MediaBox is no longer in the origin. Fix this condition by enabling this option.
  • Missing Page Box: A missing Page Box is marked as such.
