Impose Editor > Marks > Captions
Availability: All Versions
When installing and using the Workflow, only Windows system fonts are accessible and can be used. The Workflow accesses these fonts when information needs to be displayed with text. If you want to use your own fonts in the Impose Editor, you can upload fonts using the Font Manager. Learn more in this article,

1. Background Information
When using the Workflow you can only access Windows system fonts. The Workflow uses these fonts if it is needed to display, for example, Captions or variable texts. If you want to use your own fonts to display information, you can upload them to the Workflow using the Font Manager. It also provides a clean and tidy overview of all available fonts.
1.1. Fonts and their usability
When problems occur in print production, one possible reason is the use of a font that is not "cleanly" encoded. Fonts are standalone programs that describe individual glyphs as graphics, using resources such as character spacing, x-height, baseline, cap height, descender and ascenders, kerning, and encoding. Fonts are and remain a complex topic, which has only been made slightly easier with the application of the OpenType standard between Microsoft and Adobe.
For this reason, it is important to note that not all font formats, nor all font sources can be processed in the Workflow. Please observe the following rules for the trouble-free operation regarding fonts:
Rule 1: Only use fonts that can be installed locally (available from installable files) on a system. Do not use web fonts – in Adobe applications these are also called Type Kit or Adobe Fonts.
Rule 2: Only use fonts with the following formats:
Format | Symbol | Description | Usable |
---|---|---|---|
Adobe PostScript Type 1-Fonts |
a |
Can’t be installed on Windows 10 | No |
True Type Font [1] |
TT |
Most of them can be used. However, there are a few derivatives that can only be used with Mac OS X. |
Yes (no) |
Open Type Font [2] |
O |
Font format, which can contain up to 65,000 characters and can be used with both systems - Windows and Mac OSX |
Yes |
SVG Font [3] | Sag | Font format for creating emoticons |
No |
Variable Fonts [4] | Var | Fonts whose typeface can be adjusted using sliders. Currently not yet supported, because the necessary extensions are not yet available in WebKit. |
No |
But your asking, how can users tell which font format a font has? A small hint could be provided by the font menu of Adobe applications, which show the font format using an icon on the right side.

1.2. Opening the Font Manager
Before you can use fonts for Captions in the Impose Editor, you must first create a new imposition in the Impose Editor and create a Default Caption. Proceed as follows:
- Select the Production Job menu item [8].
- Open an existing Production Job by double-clicking on an entry in the list or create a new Production Job via + New [5] in the action bar.
- Then select a Substrate or the Substrate Definition in the Output Configuration [6] tab.
- Then switch to the Impose tab [7] and select any Impose Mode [9].

- Selecting an Impose Mode opens the Impose Editor in the selected mode. However, you can also directly open the Impose Editor under the menu item Automation > Impose Editor without first creating a Job.
- Add at least one Print Item to the imposition and add a Default Caption using the Captions settings under the Marks tab of the Impose Editor. If you need more detailed information about Captions, please refer to the article Overview.
- Next to the Font Size input there is the Open Font Manager [10] symbol.
- Click on this icon to open the Font Manager.

2. Using the Font Manager
As soon as you click on the icon, the Font Manager dialog opens. In this dialog you will find information about the fonts installed on the Workflow server.
To upload your own font you have to click on the + symbol [14] located on the bottom right under the listed fonts. This opens the native operating system file management and you can select your desired font. When you select a font, the font will be installed on the Workflow server. To confirm that the font was uploaded, enter the name of the font in the search field. If the font was uploaded incorrectly, you can remove it using the Delete [15] function. Once you have completed the font install process, you can close it by pressing Close [16]. Once the installation process is complete, the font will be available in the Workflow and the Impose Editor.
2.1. User Interface
The UI is divided into two areas - Available Fonts and Font Information.
Available Fonts: In the area highlighted in yellow you can...

2.2.1. Deleting a Font
To delete a font family, you simply need to:
- Locate the font family [14]
- Select the corresponding font [16]
- Press the Delete "Font" button [19]. Note that the font will be deleted immediately by the server without any further confirmation.
Delete a font family
The function to delete an entire font family including all font styles in one operation has not yet been implemented. You must delete each font style individually. As soon as the last font is deleted, the font family is no longer included in the list of available fonts.
