3.26 Convert Lab to RGB

Updated on

Find out in this article,

  • which requirements must be met to carry out this Fixup and
  • how to apply the Fixup.

1. Introduction

The  Fixup Convert LAB to RGB is available in the Workflow. This Fixup aims to convert all objects created in LAB to RGB.

2. General

The Fixup Convert LAB to RGB can be used to convert LAB elements to an ICC-based RGB. This allows to carry out corrections to the color values based on RGB, as editing color values in LAB is not feasible for everyone.

Find the Fixup in the Data Preparation tab of an Article, Order or Production Job by:

  • entering the name of the Fixup in the Filter area,
  • activating the option Color in the Category area,
  • activating the option Convert in the Action area,
  • activating the option RGB as well as Lab in the Search area.

3. Description

With this Fixup all LAB objects are converted to the selected ICC-based RGB to make it easier to edit the color values. The RGB target color space to which Lab is converted also has to be specified. The colors will not change significantly as a result of this conversion. Change will only be visible if you have selected sRGB in the RGB Working Color Space of the Workflow and select e.g. Adobe RGB or ECI-RGB when performing the Fixup.

Convert to RGB Working Color Space

Essentially the conversion should always result in the set RGB working color space. Therefore, unwanted surprises in the color conversion fail to appear.

3.1. Requirements and Functionality

For Fixup to do what it promises, the following conditions must be met:

  • There is at least one LAB object in the file.

The following option is available for converting from LAB to RGB:

  • Target RGB Color Space [1] - select the RGB target color space to which you want to convert the Lab objects from the drop-down menu. The following options are available:
    • sRGB IEC61966-2.1
    • Adobe RGB (1998)
    • eciRGB v2

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this function, refer to the sample file "Sample_Convert LAB to RGB.pdf". The file was always created in DeviceRGB. All pink objects were created in LAB .

After applying the Fixup, the file "Sample_Convert LAB to RGB_End.pdf" is created, where all LAB objects were converted to RGB. Therefore, the value from Figure 1 was used. All objects that were not previously in LAB are still in DeviceRGB after the conversion.
