3.14 Add Pole Pockets

Updated on

In this article, you will learn

  • which requirements must be met for this Fixup, and
  • how to apply the Fixup.

1. Introduction

The Fixup Add Pole Pockets is available in the Workflow. The Fixup is designed to add a Pole Pocket to the selected side of the Print Item. The Print Item on the back is mirrored on the front.

2. General

The Fixup Add Pole Pocket can be used to create a Pole Pocket on the front of a Print Item. The back of the Print Item is mirrored onto the front. It is also possible to set an overlap on the back, which will be applied to the front as well.

To find the Fixup, go to the Data Preparation tab of an Article, Order, or Production Job by

  • entering the name of the Fixup in the Filter area,
  • activating the Option LFP in the Category area,
  • activating the Option Add in the Action area,
  • activating the Option Bleed and Pole Pocket in the Search area.

3. Description

Use this Fixup to create a Pole Pocket on the desired side of the Print Item by mirroring the Print Item. For double-sided Print Items, the second side is mirrored onto the front. If an overlap is set, it will also be mirrored onto the front. This creates a "Bleed" effect based on the Print Item on the reverse side.

3.1. Requirements and Functionality

For the Fixup to function as intended, the following requirements must be met:

  • The print file contains a maximum of two pages - a front and a back.
  • The print file can also be single-sided, in which case the same Print Item is used for mirroring.

The following options can be selected to create a Pole Pocket:

  • Templates [1] – save selected settings as a template and apply them to other Articles/Print Items.
  • Reference Edge [2] – select the edge/side where a Pole Pocket should be created. All other options that are selected relate to the selected edges.
  • Hem [3] – enter the size of the hem for the respective side. By clicking on the lock icon, the values for the respective page can be entered separately. For the Variable Content [8], select the desired placeholder – database field or user-defined field – from which the value for the hem (i.e., Pole Pocket) of the respective edge should be retrieved.
  • Also add hem on page 2 [4] – activating this option creates another Pole Pocket on the second side (back). Side 2 is used for the front, and side 1 for the back.
  • Additional Overlap [5] – enter the size of the additional overlap for the respective side. The specified value is mirrored on the front, in addition to the hem, and overlaps when the hem is created on the back. This option helps to avoid "Flashes". For the Variable Content [9], select the desired placeholder – database field or user-defined field – from which the value for the overlap of the respective edge should be retrieved.
  • Create non-printed Welding Areas at the corners [6] – if three or four edges are selected as the reference edge, activating this option leaves the corners of the created hem unprinted.
  • Create Backside [7] – in the drop-down menu, select how the backside of the Pole Pocket for a single-page Print Item should be handled. The following options are available:
    • Use Artwork of the Frontside on Backside – the backside mirrors the hem from the front side. The backside remains. For a single-page file, the Print Item on the frontside is used for the backside.
    • Empty Backside – the second side (backside) is used for the hem on the frontside. All objects on the backside are deleted, leaving an empty page.
    • No Backside – the second side (backside) is used for the hem on the frontside. The backside is deleted, leaving a single-page file.
    • Variable Content – for the Variable Content [10], select the desired placeholder – database field or user-defined field – from which the value for generating the backside should be retrieved. The following values must be present in the selected field for the generation to be executed.
      • Frontside_on_the_Backside
      • Create_blank_Backside
      • Create_without_Backside

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this function, refer to the sample file "Sample_Add pole pockets.pdf". This is a two-page file (front and backside).

After applying the Fixup, the file "Sample_Add pole pockets_End.pdf" is created, where a Pole Pocket has been added to the top and bottom edges. The values from Figure 1 were used.

The file "Sample_Add pole pockets_End2.pdf" is available for comparison. In this file, a hem was created on all four edges using the values from Figure 1. In addition, the Option Create non-printed Welding Areas at the corners was activated.
