3.23 Convert Black Text Objects to Rich Black

1. Introduction

The Fixup Convert Black Text Objects to Rich Black is available in the Workflow. The aim of the Fixup is to convert black CMYK text objects (0/0/0/100) to Rich Black. The CMYK values for Rich Black can be selected by the user.

2. General

The Fixup Convert Black Text Objects to Rich Black can be used to convert black text objects to Rich Black. This allows you to e.g. print in a consistent black color. It is also possible to include all intermediate color values - from 0 to 100 percent - in the conversion.

Find the Fixup in the Data Preparation tab of an Article, Order, or Production Job by

  • entering the name of the Fixup in the Filter area,
  • activating the Color option in the Category area,
  • activating the Convert options in the Action area,
  • activating the Rich Black or Text option in the Search area.

3. Description

The Fixup can be used to convert pure black text to Rich Black. The Fixup searches for text objects with the CMYK values 0/0/0/100 and replaces these with the entered CMYK values. Please note that only text elements that are larger than 5 pt are converted during the conversion.

3.1. Requirements and Functionality

For the Fixup to do what it promises, the following requirements must be met:

  • The file contains black CMYK text objects.

The following options are available to convert black text objects to Rich Black:

  • Template [1] – Settings selected in the dialog can be saved as a template and thus applied to other Articles/Print Items.
  • Color picker [2] – enter the desired CMYK values for the Rich Black that should be converted here.
  • Include intermediate color values [3] – when this option is selected, all tonal values of the black that should be converted are included in the conversion.

3.2. Before/After

To experiment with this function, refer to the sample file "Sample_Convert Black Text to Rich Black.pdf". The file contains black text with the CMYK color values 0/0/0/100. This text should be converted to Rich Black with the CMYK values 50/50/0/100.

After applying the Fixup, the file "Sample_Convert Black Text to Rich Black_End.pdf" is created. Here, the black text elements were converted to Rich Black. The values from Figure 1 were used for this.
