3.50 Crop Print Item to defined Size

1. Introduction

The Fixup Crop Print Item to defined Size is available in the Workflow. The purpose of this Fixup is to crop the Print Item to a specific size.

2. General

The Fixup Crop Print Item to defined Size can be used to crop a Print Item to the desired size. In addition, specify a Bleed and an Offset.

Find the Fixup in the Data Preparation tab of an Article, Order, or Production Job:

  • Enter the name of the Fixup in the Filter area,
  • Activating the Page Box option in the Category area,
  • Activating the Change and Crop options in the Action area,
  • Activating the MediaBox, CropBox, BleedBox or TrimBox option in the Property area.

3. Description

This Fixup allows you to crop the Print Item to the defined size. You can also specify whether a Bleed should be retained and whether overlapping information should be cropped. Optionally, a Preview file can be created for the cropped Print Item in the desired Color Space and File Type, which is then stored in the "Additional Files" tab for the Print Item.

3.1. Requirements and Functionality

There is no special requirement for the Fixup to do what it is supposed to do.

To crop a Print Item to a defined size, choose from the following options:

  • Templates [1] – settings selected in the dialog can be saved as templates and thus applied to other Articles/Print Items, as well as used in the Operation Apply Fixups.
  • Position [2] – select from the selection menu the position from which the following values are to be specified. The following options are available:
    • ImageBox – the Print Item is cropped starting from the ImageBox. Therefore, make sure that the ImageBox is set to the desired Page Box.
    • ImageBox + Bleed  – the Print Item is cropped starting from the size of the ImageBox + Bleed. Note that the Bleed refers to the Expected Bleed. Make sure that the expected Bleed corresponds to the actual Bleed of the file.
    • Variable Content [3] – select the desired placeholder – database field or user-defined field – from which the value for the position should be retrieved. The following values must be present in the selected field for the position to be selected:
      • ImageBox
      • ImageBox + Bleed
  • Starting Point [14] – select from the drop-down menu starting from which position the Print Item should be cropped. The following options are available:
    • Center – the cropped Print Item is created from the center of the initial file.
    • Upper Left Corner – the cropped Print Item is created from the top left corner of the initial file.
    • Upper Right Corner – the cropped Print Item is created starting from the upper right corner of the initial file.
    • Lower Left Corner – the cropped Print Item is created starting from the lower left corner of the initial file.
    • Lower Right Corner – the cropped Print Item is created starting from the lower right corner of the initial file.
    • Variable Content [15] – select the desired placeholder – database field or user-defined field – from which the value for the starting point should be retrieved. The following values must be present in the selected field for the starting value to be selected:
      • Center
      • UpperLeft
      • UpperRight
      • LowerLeft
      • LowerRight
  • Width [4] – enter the width of the Print Item to which it should be cropped. For the Variable Content [5], select the desired placeholder  database field or user-defined field  from which the value for the width should be retrieved.
  • Height [16] – enter the height of the Print Item to which it should be cropped. For Variable Content [17], select the desired placeholder  database field or user-defined field  from which the value for the height should be retrieved.
  • X-Offset [6] – enter the desired X-Offset here. + values move the section to the right from the starting point,  values move it to the left. For Variable Content [7], select the desired placeholder – database field or user-defined field – from which the value for the X-Offset should be retrieved.
  • Y-Offset [18] – enter the desired Y-Offset here. + values move the section up from the starting point,  values move it down. For the Variable Content [19], select the desired placeholder – database field or user-defined field – from which the value for the Y-Offset should be retrieved.
  • Bleed [8] – enter the Bleed to be retained for the respective page  top, bottom, left, and right. For the Variable Content [9], select the desired placeholder  database field or user-defined field  from which the value for the Bleed of the respective page should be retrieved.
  • Remove overlapping Images [10] – activate this option if you want to remove overlapping image information resulting from cropping the file.
  • Remove overlapping Vector Paths [20] – activate this option if you want to remove overlapping vector paths resulting from cropping the file.
  • Create Preview [11] activate this option if you want to create a preview for the cropped Print Item. You will find the generated image in the Extras tab after executing the fixup. Activating these options allows you to refer to the following options:
    • Resolution [12] – enter the desired resolution of the preview to be generated in dpi.
    • Color Space [13] select the color space in which the preview should be created from the selection menu. The following options are available:
      • RGB  – the preview image is created in RGB.
      • Grayscale – the preview image is created in grayscale.
    • File type [21] – select the file type in which the preview image should be created from the selection menu. The following options are available:
      • JPEG
      • PNG
      • TIFF
      • PDF

4. Before/After

To experiment with this function, refer to the sample file "Sample_Crop Print Item to defined Size.pdf". The file is 100 x 200 mm in size and should now be cropped to 100 x 100 mm.

After applying the Fixup, the file "Sample_Crop Print Item to defined Size_End.pdf" is created, where the Print Item has been cropped to 100 x 100 mm. The values from Figure 1 were used.
