Find out in this article,
- which requirements must be met for this Fixup and
- how to apply the Fixup.
1. Introduction
The Tiling Fixup is available in the Workflow. The aim of this Fixup is to create vertical or horizontal tiles by entering the respective size or by entering the number of tiles.
2. General
The Fixup Tiling can be used to divide a Print Item into several Tiles (parts). The user can decide whether the parts should be created vertically or horizontally, by entering the size or by entering the number. In addition, set the printed area and the total overlap area.
Find the Fixup in the Data Preparation tab of an Article, Order, or Production Job by
- entering the name of the Fixup in the Filter area,
- activating the LFP option in the Category area,
- activating the Create option in the Action area,
- activating the Banner or Tiling option in the Search area.
3. Description
Use this Fixup to create vertical or horizontal tiles by entering the desired size or number of tiles. The user can also set a printed and total overlap area. Optionally, a Dieline for a Cutter Device. It is also possible to create a printed line for marking the visible format or the production format.
Use the Fixup for the following purposes:
- Creating wallpaper panels of the same width with corresponding Bleed.
- Creating simple horizontal single-column tiles with or without additional Bleed on the outer edge.
- Creating simple vertical single-column tiles with or without additional Bleed on the outer edge.
3.1. Requirements and Functionality
For the Fixup to do what it promises, no special requirements need to be met.
The Fixup dialog consists of three tabs - Basic Settings, Add Dieline and Add Printed Line - in which the respective options for the three Fixup functions are available.

3.1.1. "Basic Settings" tab
The following options are available for creating tiles in the Basic Settings tab:
- Templates [1] – settings selected in the dialog can be saved as a template and thus applied to other Articles/Print Items.
-
Tiling Method [2] – select the method that should be used to create the tiles from the drop-down menu. The following options are available:
- By size – the tiles are created by entering the desired size. To do this, enter the desired size in the Tile Size option [13].
- By number – the tiles are created by entering the desired number. To do this, enter the desired number in the No. of Tiles option.
-
Variable Content [12] – select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the tiling method should be retrieved. The following values must be found in the selected field for the selection to be executed:
Size
Number
-
Mounting Direction [3] – select the mounting direction that you want to use from the selection menu. The following options are available:
- Horizontal – the mounting direction is horizontal (from left to right). The Print Item are thus divided vertically.
- Vertical – the mounting direction is vertical (from top to bottom). The Print Item is therefore divided horizontally.
-
Variable Content [4] – select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the mounting direction should be retrieved. The following values must be found in the selected field for the selection to be executed:
Horizontal
Vertical
- Tile Size / No. of Tiles [13] – enter the desired tile size (for tiling method By size) or the number of tiles (for tiling method By number) here. For the Variable Content [14], select the desired placeholder - Database field or User-defined field - from which the value for the size of the tiles or the number of tiles should be retrieved.
- Printed Overlap [5] – enter the Bleed to be printed for the tile at the selected horizontal or vertical mounting direction here. For the Variable Content [6], select the desired placeholder - Database field or User-defined field - from which the value for the printed overlap should be retrieved.
- Overlap (printed + white) [15] – enter the size for the entire overlap here. Please note that the printed part of the overlap is also included here. For the Variable Content [16], select the desired placeholder - Database field or User-defined field - from which the value for the entire overlap should be retrieved.
- Create Bleed [7] – activate this option if an additional Bleed is to be created for the Print Item on the outer edges of the Print Item. The following methods can be selected to create a Bleed:
-
Method [8] – in the drop-down menu, select the method you want to use to create the Bleed for the Print Item. Please note that these options can only be selected if the Create Bleed option has been activated. Otherwise, these options are grayed out. The following options are available:
- Repeat last pixel as image – creates a Bleed by repeating the last pixel of the Print Item. The Bleed is created as an image.
- Mirror page objects – creates a Bleed by mirroring the entire Print Items on the respective sides as a shape XObject.
- Pattern Extension – creates a Bleed by repeating a pattern. This variant is suitable for wallpaper production based on pattern repetition.
-
Variable Content [17] – select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the method for creating a Bleed should be retrieved. The following values must be found in the selected field for the selection to be executed:
LastPixelCorners
PageContCorners
Pattern_Extension
- Top, Bottom, Left, Right [9] – enter the desired Bleed for the respective side of the Print Items here. The values can be entered separately by clicking on the lock symbol. For the Variable Content [18], select the desired placeholder - Database field or User-defined field - from which the value for the respective page should be retrieved.
- Layer Name [10] – enter the name of the Layer to which the Bleed should be applied here. If you do not want to create a separate Layer, remove the name from the input field. For the Variable Content [19], select the desired placeholder - Database field or User-defined field - from which the value for the layer name should be retrieved.
- Remove overlapping images [11] – activate this option to remove overlapping image information from the individual tiles and thus reduce the file size, for example.
- Remove overlapping vector paths [20] – activate this option to remove overlapping vector paths and thus reduce the complexity of the individual tiles.

3.1.2. "Additional Dieline" tab
To add a Dieline for the tiles, the following options can be selected in the Additional Dieline tab:
- Add a Dieline for the Production Format [21] – activate this option when creating a Dieline for the production format (view format of the tile including the overlap). Please note that all options in this tab are only selectable when this option is activated. Otherwise, these options are grayed out.
- Technical Color [22] – in the selection menu, select the Spot Color with which the Dieline should be created. All Technical Colors that have been marked system-wide with the Cut Contour type are available.
- Line Width [23] – enter the Line Width of the Dieline that should be created. For the Variable Content [24], select the desired placeholder - database field or user-defined field - from which the value for the Line Width should be retrieved.
- Offset [25] – enter the offset to the production format for the Dieline that should be created here. "+" values move the line outwards and "-" values move the Dieline inwards. For the Variable Content [26], select the desired placeholder - Database field or User-defined field - from which the value for the Offset should be retrieved.
- Line Shape [27] – select the desired line shape of the Dieline in the selection menu.
- Overprint State [28] – select the overprint status for the Dieline that should be created here. Choose between Overprint and Knockout.

3.2. Before/After
You can use the sample file "Sample_Tiling.pdf" to experiment with this function. The file has a size of 500 x 300 mm and no bleed. Print Items should now be divided into five tiles of equal size. A Bleed should be created for the Print Item itself and a Dieline and overlap area for the individual tiles.
After applying the Fixup, the file "Sample_Tiling_End.pdf" is created. Here, a Bleed was created for the Print Item, the file was divided into five tiles and a Dieline was added for each tile. The values from Figure 1 and Figure 3 were used.
